WHO: Revolution at New York City FC
WHERE: Yankee Stadium, Bronx, NY
WHEN: 7 p.m.
TV/RADIO: NBC Sports Boston/WBZ-FM 98.5/1260 AM (Portuguese)
WHAT’S UP: The Revolution will try to avoid going 10 matches without a victory when they go to the smallest field in the entirety of Major League Soccer, The House That Jeter Built, for midweek football. The Bronx Blues are in a similar pickle as the Revs (0-6-3 in last nine), as NYCFC has gone 1-3-2 in its last six.
Sean here. The match is underway down in the City. The starting XI’s are below, plus match notes underway the live feed.
Revs in the navy blue strip for this midweek matchup. NYCFC get us started, headed toward the infield. Revs to the Bleacher Creatures. Periodic updates to follow.
' Wright making his presence known with a couple of fouls early on. Well, okay....
' ALMOST an own goal by Michael Mancienne as New York City has a vicious counter. That's twice now.
' Sweat with a go, right into Knighton's gut... and then Castellanos with a shot at close range! Saved Knighton.
' First corner for the Revs, Penilla takes it... Caldwell short delivery, cleared.
' Foul by Machado sees NYC play advantage, but the referee calls play back. Break for the Revolution. Machado booked.
' Villa on the free kick.... goes wide of the right-field post.
' Save by Knighton as Ring gets a nice shot on. Ring had acres of space around him. Central defenders out of position.
' Corner to NYCFC, header is wide... just wide. Player nearly plowed through Rowe to get to that ball.
' Over the bar by NYC on that corner.
' ALMOST for Wright. That goes off the post and across the face of goal on the ricochet.
' Tinnerholm with a shot saved by Knighton after Penilla and Villa both slip near first base.
' Over the bar by Ring.
' Zahibo takes the free kick, deflects it off the wall for a corner.
' Good football by NYC that comes to nothing.
' Machado down after a little collision.
' Another save by Knighton at the far post.
' Save. Knighton.
' Good clearance by Mancienne on the corner. One minute minimum stoppages.
+1' HALF
First half thoughts:
NYCFC with a bunch of offense and 64 percent possession. The Revs with nothing on target, save the Wright off the woodwork. Passing numbers not good for the Revs, either: 55 percent of the passes connected, 40 percent of 55 in the final third connected. Four saves by Knighton so far. NYC with 11 shots, Revs 2.
Reallllllyy fast pace so far.
Second half back underway. Fagundez in for Machado. Tactical sub.
' Rubbish challenge by Castellanos on Mancienne, and he goes into the book.
' Fagundez cracks all the way back and he gets a toe in to stop that NYC counterattack.
' Villa drives a left-footer into the left-field stands.
' Castellanos with a drive on a counter, he claims it's a handle.... the ref calls for a corner, but it's now possibly going to VAR....
' No VAR. Corner. Seventh for NYC. Free header... wide.
' Agudelo coming on for Zahibo. So that will leave the Revs with one defensive midfielder in Caldwell... but what other choice does Friedel have? So that's two subs used. Naoko Funiyama says Zahibo complaining of hamstring trouble.
' OFFSIDE. Fagundez with a slippy to Wright, but Wright is behind the defense.
' Villa shot deflected off the Revs... Anibaba and Mancienne get back quickly to defend that.
' Almost for NYC, and Ring has Knighton out of position, but he scuffs it, and it goes over the end line off a Revs player.
' Penilla with a shot that Johnson stops.
' Villa with a half-volley.... deflected wide. Villa gets away from Mancienne on that.
' Amagat on for Castellanos.
' Fagundez with a chip, saved by Johnson.
' GOAL REVOLUTION, and it's Brian Wright claiming it... a good counterattack as Fagundez plays to Penilla, he shoots, Johnson saves it, and Wright, in the right place at the right time, pops it in with his left foot. First-ever MLS goal for Wright.
' Angking making his MLS debut as he comes on for Wright.
' Lewis on for Sands. Second NYC sub.
' Farrell shot blocked after some good football by the Revs.
' Penilla shot save by Johnson, Angking with the shot off the rebound, OFF THE POST.
' Save by Knighton. Good defense.
' NYC going fast with a couple of corners. Revs doing better in staying organized.
' Good reactionary defense by Anibaba to make that stop.
' Ring and Penilla both go into the book. Caldwell has been down a couple of times, possibly with a touch of cramp. Humid night in the Apple.
' Bye gets booked for a foul on the edge of the area. Nearly a pen. Free kick in a dangerous area, 19 yards away. Four minutes minimum added on.
+1' Revs clear it.
+3' OMG. Knighton goes over to play a volley, NYC gets a foot on it to center the ball, goes wide. Ball over the end line on the volley... possible.
+4' Ring drags Agudelo down in the corner.
