Midway through preseason, who is winning the key Patriots' positional battles? taken at BSJ Headquarters (Patriots)

(Adam Richins/Boston Sports Journal)

Earlier this month, we took a look at how the biggest positional battles on the Patriots’ roster were shaking out. With preseason halfway done and cuts just two weeks away, we thought it would be a good time to revisit where each one stands.

Punter
The field: Rookie Corey Bojorquez, veteran Ryan Allen.
The pre-camp favorite: Allen.
Who was winning earlier this month? Draw.
Who is winning now? Allen, and it’s starting to look like a bit of a rout. The rookie flashed very positively over the course of the spring and the early part of the summer, but has fallen off lately. It was telling that Allen got all the reps in the first two preseason games. Afterward, Bill Belichick hinted that when Bojorquez has earned game reps, he’d get them. Of course, the Patriots could just be trying to hide Bojorquez from other teams so they can get him to the practice squad. Wouldn't be the first time.

Left Tackle
The field: New veteran Trent Brown, returnee LaAdrian Waddle, rookie Isaiah Wynn.
The pre-camp favorite: A tossup.
Who was winning earlier this month? Brown.
Who is winning now? Brown. It wasn’t really a race for much of camp, but the season-ending injury to Wynn pretty much made it official. The bigger question right now might be who is in the running to become the backup swing tackle: Waddle has the experience in the system, but Ulrick John has really started to come on strong over the course of the summer and is making a run at the gig.
