Patriots camp report 07.27.18: Marcus Cannon exits, Trent Brown still the guy at LT taken at Gillette Stadium (Patriots)

(Adam Richins for BSJ)

FOXBOROUGH — Practice No. 2 is in the books, so let's get into it:

THREE THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW

Marcus Cannon leaves: The starting right tackle left at some point near the middle of practice and was replaced by LaAdrian Waddle. Not sure exactly what happened, but there wasn't an apparent injury or play when it happened. And there didn't seem to be a whole lot of urgency in getting him treated, so that would lead me to believe that it's likely minor in nature and/or could have been heat-related (the sun was in full effect, and it was very humid). Waddle stepped into Cannon's starting spot and seemed to be effective (second-straight non-padded day).

Trent Brown again the starting left tackle: Two days in and there appears to be no looming rotation at left tackle, as Trent Brown took the starting reps again with first-round pick Isaiah Wynn on the second team. Not sure if Cannon's injury affected any planned rotation with Waddle, but it didn't appear that way. More coming on Brown and left tackle from me in column form.

Again a slower pace: Like the first day, the practice was slow and methodical. Hopefully, they're just resting up for the next two days of padded practice.

SHANK IT OFF

For now, there's a punting competition going on between the incumbent, Ryan Allen, and the undrafted challenger, Corey Bojorquez, so we're going to cover the hell out of it because Bedard's a nerd like that.

  • There's little question Bojorquez has the much bigger leg, but this may come down to consistency and his 2.70 horrendous shank is not going to help things.

  • Still, even with the shank he had the better hangtime (which isn't the end-all and be-all on punting but considering we can't roam the sideline and mark off yardage, that's all we have to go on).

  • If you take the shank out, Bojorquez's advantage was even more pronounced: 4.60 to 4.07.

  • Should be fun to watch this play out.

TOP PLAYS

  • Brian Hoyer and Julian Edelman hooked up on a sick combo route in the end zone for a touchdown. Edelman started in the slot with another receiver on the outside. Edelman started on a go, but then did an out, and then went up the sideline (think it was an adjustment to their razor/smash combo). Hoyer didn't even really see Edelman, because Demarius Travis (who's been very good through two days) was running in phase with Edelman. But Hoyer dropped it in a bucket along the sidelines and Edelman made the catching falling out of bounds. Pretty sweet.

  • Stephon Gilmore recreated his AFC Championship Game pass breakup when he denied another Brady and Edelman touchdown. Same area of the field, same right hand swat. Again, a terrific play.

  • Cordarelle Patterson held off Gilmore with his right arm and caught a back-shoulder pass from Brady with his left for a score.

  • JC Jackson stepped in front of a pass from Brian Hoyer to Devin Lucien and intercepted it. While it was a nice play from Jackson, it was more of a poor pass from Hoyer — the pass was way too late and shouldn't have been thrown. It was sort of like this, but a beat later:

  • Both my kids cleanly caught field goals on the hill from Stephen Gostkowski #prouddadmoment

QUICK HITS

  • Much of the same from Gronk today — stretches of dominating play and no outwardly happy-go-lucky reactions that have been an annual staple — with one addition: it appeared that he sat out a decent portion of practice and watched from the sidelines as Allen, Tye and Hollister got a lot more of the action. Not sure what that means, if anything. But his workload was noticeably less today.

  • When Rowe wasn't the No. 2 corner, JC Jackson was.

  • Edelman, Riley McCarron, Braxton Berrios and Patrick Chung all fielded punts.

  • Luke Bowanko got some action at LG, with Ted Karras switching over to RG.

  • There really wasn't a whole lot of substance to this practice. Let's get this going tomorrow, huh?! #padup #realfootball
