WHO: Los Angeles Galaxy at Revolution
WHERE: Gillette Stadium, Foxborough, Mass.
WHEN: Saturday, July 14, 7:30 p.m.
TV/RADIO: NBC Sports Boston/WBZ-FM 98.5/1260 AM (Portugeuse)
WHAT’S UP: It’s the final match of a three-match homestand for the Revs (7-4-7, 28 points, 5th Eastern Conference), as they’ll be on the road for 10 of the remaining 15 matches during the regular season after tonight. And tonight, it’s our old Western Conference rivals the Galaxy (7-7-4, 25, 8th Western Conference) as the opponent, with Zlatan Ibrahimovic not expected to see time tonight — but 30,000 are expected in the stands. A win or a draw will extend the Revs’ current unbeaten streak to eight matches.
Sean here at Gillette, where there is no Zlatan in the squad for the Galaxy. The starting XI’s are below, with your match notes immediately below.
The match is underway. The Galaxy get us started and head toward The Fort, the Revs to the Banner End. Periodic updates are below. Enjoy the match.
4' No fluidity so far as LA has played out of the back. No real pressure from the Revs so far.
7' First bit of attack as Fagundez feeds Penilla, he gets into the box and crosses in, right at Bingham. He had Bunbury trailing.
9' First corner of the match, and Delamea appears to be shoved from behind inside the box, but no call.
10' HOLY DIELNA. Fagundez slots in from the corner and a defender tries to clear it as Bunbury and Penilla converge.... it goes to Dielna, who unleashes a howitzer blast from distance on target, but Bingham stops it.
15' Penilla with a wide-open channel, and he curls it off-target. Caicedo got forward, too. Revs are doing a good job of applying pressure and getting into the attacking third so far.
19' Matt Turner called into action to stop Romain Alessandrini's scuffer. Good build-up by the Galaxy in the last two sequences.
20' Another Turner corral on a free kick sees excellent distribution.
22' Fagundez with a go from 25 yards sees Bingham make a stop. Good passing by the Revs.
23' Alessandrini goes into the book for a rubbish tackle on Penilla. And Cristian Penilla has been sent off with a straight red card, so the Revs will be down to 10 men.
28' GOAL REVOLUTION, and it's Diego Fagundez who gets behind the defense and fires home on Luis Caicedo's slippy, a nifty give-and-go. And the 10-man Revolution hold a 1-nil lead on the Galaxy.
32' ALMOST a second for Diego. Hamana hamana hamana.
33' ALMOST one for Zahibo! They are queuing up to take shots now.
36' Almost an own goal on the Revs goes to Delamea's slide, but Turner is there to stop it.
38' GOAL GALAXY, and it's a half volley by Chris Pontius on a pass from Ashley Cole. That silences the Gillette crowd, who had did a solid REH-VO-LOO-SHUN chant and the wave three times in succession. 1-1
42' Kitchen goes into the book for a reckless challenge.
45' GOAL REVOLUTION, and OH MY GOD IT'S LUIS CAICEDO! CAICEDO! CAICEDO! Andrew Farrell takes Fagundez's pass and he serves it up on a silver platter for Caicedo, who just drives it in with the noggin to put New England up 2-1.
Two minutes of stoppage time.
HALF
Halftime thoughts:
Revs lively on the ball, getting into the box multiple times. Also holding their own with 10 men. Huge response by the Revs on the Farrell-to-Caicedo ball. Wow.
Cookie time.
SECOND HALF
We're back underway at Gillette, and the Revs get us started. Headed to The Fort.
50' Agudelo has a shot blocked in the box, and Fagundez gets the rebound and his shot is deflected into the lighthouse tunnel for a corner... which goes through the 18 without a blue shirt touching it.
52' Agudelo with a backheel behind his back over on the touchline, drives in, uses some step-overs, his shot saved by Bingham.
55' Gio Dos Santos free kick easily handled by Turner.
57' Delamea into the book for a professional foul.
59' Ashley Cole into the referee's book.
Tonight's attendance: 36,573
61' Caicedo down, and Evan Allen out to check him out.
71' Dielna free kick headed over the end line for a corner. The corner is handled. That's all that's really happened in 10 minutes. Yellow card to Zahibo.
74' ALMOST for Bunbury, as he tries to flick Farrell's pass out of midair, and it DOINKS the post. That would have been the dagger.
77' LA sub Boateng on for Ciani.
79' Fagundez and Bunbury play give-and-go, Cole stops a Bunbury flick. Almost a third for New England.
83' Caicedo with a dispossession to cut off an LA counterattack, and Kitchen clobbers him from behind. But Caicedo goes into the book. He misses the next match.
84' Diego with a piledriver shot that Bingham stops.
85' SENDING OFF. Ashley Cole gets a second yellow card, and he's taking an early shower. So both teams playing with 10.
86' Brandon Bye into the match for Agudelo. Great performance for JA17.
87' DELAMEA YOU BEAUTY. A sliding stop to deny Ola Kamara, who has been otherwise silent tonight, and that was wonderful.
88' Boston native Sheanon Williams on for Kitchen.
90' BIG stops by Farrell and Delamea in the box. Shout for handling on Delamea, no go. And Nemeth comes on for Bunbury.
Minimum of five minutes added on.
90+2' GOAL GALAXY, and it's Dave Romney with the stoppage-time equalizer. Alessandrini with the service on the corner. Oh boy, that's a heartbreaker. 2-2
90+3' GOAL GALAXY, and it's Pontius again. The 36,573 in attendance are going home heartbroken. Ball goes through Anibaba's legs on the pass from the flank. 3-2 Galaxy.
