Former Red Sox slugger Hanley Ramirez could be the subject of a law enforcement investigation, according to crime reporter Michelle McPhee.
McPhee reported Friday that Ramirez may be connected to a person stopped by police last month. The person in question is being linked to a drug trafficking operation in Lawrence, Mass.
The Red Sox, who designated Ramirez for assignment exactly four weeks ago Friday and gave him his release the following week when he cleared waivers, said at the time that Ramirez's release was "a baseball decision.'' The team maintained that stance Friday as McPhee's report gained attention.
The Red Sox, who owe Ramirez approximately $15 million for the remainder of his 2018 salary, cited his declining performance in May and expressed concern whether Ramirez would be able to successfully transition to a part-time player when they announced he was being designated for assignment.
A club spokesman said the team was unaware of any possible investigation until McPhee called them Friday morning seeking comment.
Ramirez's longtime agent, Adam Katz, released a statement saying: "Hanley has no knowledge of any of the allegations contained in this media report and he is not aware of any investigation.''
Ramirez has not signed with another team after more than three weeks on the open market.
