BSJ Game Report: A's 3, Red Sox 0 -- Red Sox no-hit for first time in 25 years taken at Oakland Coliseum (Red Sox)

OAKLAND --  Athletics lefty Sean Manaea tossed a no-hitter, the first opposing pitcher to do against the Red Sox since Chris Bosio on April 22, 1993, exactly one day shy of 25 years ago.

Manaea allowed only three baserunners all night, with a leadoff walk to Mookie Betts to start the game, another walk to Andrew Benintendi in the ninth, and in between, a disputed scorer's call in the fifth with Marcus Semien dropping a blooper by Sandy Leon and the play ruled an error.

"Manaea had really good stuff and was spot-on the whole night,'' said Chris Sale, who drew the loss.

At various times, Manaea retired 14 Red Sox hitters in a row, and later, 11 in succession. He needed 108 pitches to complete the gem. In the previous seven games, the Red Sox had scored 54 runs and had collected 10 hits or more in each of those games.

"When I came out for the ninth inning,'' Manaea said, "my heart was beating out of my chest.''

The game was not without its controversy. In the sixth, Andrew Benintendi hit a chopper to the right side which was fielded by first baseman Matt Olson. Benintendi, in an effort to elude Olson's tag, steered a bit wide of the basepath and managed to slide into the bag safely. But after A's manager Bob Melvin came out, the umpiring crew gathered and determined that Benintendi was out for being out of the baseline.

"I don't know, I've never seen that call before,'' said Benintendi. "It's kind of suspect in that situation. It sucks. It's a big league hit and they don't grow on trees. I think if we have 10 hits at that point, that's a single. But the situation the game was in, they may have been searching for something and they found it."
