IN-GAME OBSERVATIONS:

  • Mookie Betts leads off the game with his second homer of the spring.

  • Not to be outdone, Brian Dozier leads off his half of the inning with his own solo homer, tying the game at 1-1.

  • As if a double off the top of the left-center wall wasn't impressive enough for Christian Vazquez, he just swiped third, taking advantage of the Twins not holding him on second base.

  • J.D. Martinez, hitting in the second spot in the lineup today, singles sharply to left-center scoring Vazquez from third.  That's followed by an opposite-field single off Dozier's glove at second for Hanley Ramirez, scoring Betts.

  • After allowing a leadoff homer to Dozier, David Price hasn't allowed another yet through three innings.

  • Betts with another homer -- hit harder than the one in the first, and this time, with a man on base. In his last six games, Betts is now 11-for-20 with seven extra-base hits.

  • Andrew Benintendi absolutely crushes  a pitch over everything in right for the fourth Red Sox homer of the game.

  • Would appear that Price is done after three innings. He just headed down to the bullpen to get a little more side work in.

  • Logan Morrison just hit a long ground-rule double to second that Benintendi misplayed. Ball fell on warning track. Benintnendi then signaled with his sunglasses that he had difficulty with sun while tracking the ball.

NEWS AND NOTES:

  • Alex Cora has J.D. Martinez hitting second in the lineup today, but he's not experimenting. The move was made solely to get Martinez a few extra at-bats. Martinez still profiles as the team's cleanup hitter on Opening Day.

  • Chris Sale, who took a comebacker off the hip Sunday, arrived early this morning and reported that he felt fine. He's set to long-toss today and throw a brief side session Monday in anticipation of his start Thursday in the opener.

  • Craig Kimbrel will make his Grapefruit League debut today.

  • Starter David Price will have an abbreviated start today, but may follow up the appearance with some extra work on the side.

  • Cora expects to have the rotation settled by the end of today, with the final roster essentially set by Monday afternoon.
