IN-GAME OBSERVATIONS:

  • Following a one-out double by Mitch Moreland, Eduardo Nunez drilled a run-scoring single to center for a 1-0 Red Sox lead.

  • Third homer of the spring for Rafael Devers, who goes deep to straightaway center, scoring Nunez.

  • The first hit of the game for the Pirates off David Price is a long one -- Jordan Luplow homers into the home bullpen in right-center.

  • On Monday, Chris Sale got hit around a bit; today, it's David Price's turn. After retiring first six Pirates in a row, has given up some hard contact here in the third.

  • Andrew Benintnedi just swatted an opposite-field double off The Wall in left, scoring Mookie Betts from first. Why do I think we'll see a ton of those at Fenway this year?

NEWS AND NOTES

  • At the same time that the big league club is taking on the Pirates Tuesday afternoon, Eduardo Rodriguez is set to throw four innings in a minor league game on one of the back fields of Fenway South. "It's huge. He's very excited about it,'' said Alex Cora. "I think four innings is a big (step) from where he was.'' Rodriguez's next assignment could come in a big league game.

  • J.D. Martinez has yet to hit a home run this spring, but Cora said: "I think his approach has been perfect. He stays with his craft. He has an idea of what he wants to do on a daily basis. Some days he's patient, some others he's aggressive. It's part of the process.''

  • Cora again praised Martinez's preparation and the impact he's had in the clubhouse. "In his own way, he's bringing a lot of knowledge and leadership and helping guys with plans, which is great. The baseball talk is getting louder and louder, which is great and I love it. In the dugout, they're paying attention to details. In the clubhouse, they're talking about situations.''
