IN-GAME OBSERVATIONS:

  • Andrew Benintendi timed his leap perfectly to make a catch on a line drive in the top of the second, saving a couple of runs.

  • The Blue Jays are having a tough time in the outfield today. In the first inning, a ball clanged off the glove of right fielder Jonathan Davis, with the play charitably ruled a double. In the bottom of the second, Kevin Pillar, ordinarily an excellent defender, dropped a relatively routine ball in center for an error.

  • Christian Vazquez chips in with a two-run homer to left in the bottom of the second, his first homer of the spring.

  • The Red Sox added two runs in the third on a sacrifice fly by Xander Bogaerts (scoring Hanley Ramirez) and a hard-hit single to right from Rafael Devers (scoring J.D. Martinez, who had doubled)

  • Benintendi ropes a double into the right field corner, scoring Mookie Betts

  • David Price's start is in the books: 4 ip 1 h 1 BB  5 K. 55/34

NEWS AND NOTES

  • LHP Drew Pomeranz (strained flexor tendon) threw a bullpen session Thursday morning and may throw some live batting practice Sunday.

  • RHP Steven Wright (knee) rebounded well from Wednesday's live BP session, his first of the spring. He'll have a three-inning session in two or three days.

  • RHP Austin Maddox (shoulder) long-tossed Wednesday morning and after a second one-inning side session, could see game action next week.

  • LHP Eduardo Rodriguez (knee) was set to throw three innings of live batting practice. "He's pushing hard,'' said Cora, "but at the same time, we've got to be patient with him. I know he wants to put us in a spot to make a decision (to pitch him) early in the season, but this is a special kid, a special arm and one start is not going to determine your season. When he's ready, he'll be pitching in big-league ballgames. But right now, the most important thing for him is the three innings he's got in front of him.''

  • C Oscar Hernandez was returned to minor league camp, leaving the Red Sox with 44 players in major league camp.
