Observations from the first period.
- That was quick. Krug with a slap shot from the point through traffic and the Bruins have a 1-0 lead.
- That was even quicker. Jake DeBrusk gives Boston a 2-0 lead.
- With Tommy Wingels in the box for slashing, the Red Wings quickly score on the power play to cut their deficit to 2-1.
- Boston breaking the puck out much better so far tonight. By my count, the Bruins are 8-for-10 on first-pass success. Boston has a 2-1 lead with 13:30 remaining in the first.
- Bruins caught in their own end and Detroit capitalizes to tie it at 2-2.
- Danton Heinen has been struggling, so drawing a penalty should give him confidence.
- Krug is playing one of his better games and his power-play goal gives Boston a 3-2 lead with 6:12 remaining in the first.
- Heinen hits the post on his next shift.
- With 11.2 seconds remaining, Backes is called for roughing.
- By my count, Bruins defensemen completed 20-of-28 first-pass attempts in the defensive and neutral zones during even-strength situations. Boston blueliners went D-to-D only five times.
Observations from the second period.
- Red Wings begin the period with 1:49 remaining on PP.
- Bruins kill it off.
- Bruins getting their second power play of the game. They are 1-for-1 so far.
- Make that 2-for-2 on the PP. Brad Marchand with the goal and the assist goes to Krug, who is having an outstanding game at both ends of the ice.
- And the Red Wings are making a goalie change. Jimmy Howard replaces Coreau.
- Backes and Ericsson drop the gloves. Clearly a "you wanna go?" situation. That's Backes' first fighting major this season.
- Boston getting its third PP of the game. Its 2-for-2 so far.
- Not a very good PP for the Bruins as the Red Wings kill it off and nearly produce a couple of shorthanded chances.
- As Carlo's penalty expires, the Red Wings score to get deficit to 4-3 with 7:55 remaining in the second period.
- Follow it around and see what it eats. Puck bouncing all over the place and finally ricochets past Howard to give Boston a 5-3 lead.
- Bruins running around and Detroit scores to cut deficit to 5-4 with 4:10 remaining in the period.
- That's the most ridiculous matching roughing penalty I have ever seen. Just a brutal call.
- Marchand's been chirping with Zetterberg all game.
- By my count, Bruins defensemen completed 12-of-18 first-pass attempts in the defensive and neutral zones during 5-on-5, even-strength situations. Boston blueliners went 5-for-6 on D-to-D attempts. Numbers were down due to so many penalties and power plays.
Observations from the third period.
- Only five seconds into the period, Marchand called for slashing.
- The Red Wings actually are effective on the delayed entry on the power play. I can't stand it, but it's working for them.
- Krug nearly records the hat trick but his shot hits the post.
- Tough penalty for Sean Kuraly at 7:41 with the Bruins holding on to a one-goal lead.
- And, as soon as his penalty is over the Red Wings score to tie the game at 5-5.
- Good play by Rick Nash to get an offensive-zone faceoff.
- Going to OT.
- By my count, Bruins defensemen completed 14-of-19 first-pass attempts in the defensive and neutral zones during 5-on-5, even-strength situations. Boston blueliners went 5-for-5 on D-to-D attempts.
