J.D. Martinez set for Monday morning Red Sox introduction

FORT MYERS, Fla. -- A week to day after the Red Sox and J.D. Martinez reached agreement on a multi-year contract, the team will finally introduce its new acquisition at a Monday morning press conference at jetBlue Park, a baseball source confirmed.

Martinez, who agreed on a five-year, $110 million contract with opt-out clauses after the 2019 and 2020 seasons, is set to meet the media early Monday morning. On Sunday night, the Red Sox had converted their media dining facility into a makeshift press conference setting, anticipating the announcement.

The finalization of the deal was officially reached Sunday, some six days after it was first agreed upon. Following up a physical and further review of the medical records, the Red Sox had some concerns about an unspecified past injury -- likely the lisfranc fracture suffered by Martinez in 2017, which cost him nearly a quarter of the season.

The Sox sought to address their concerns through some new contractual language, which reportedly offers them some protection should the injury cost Martinez significant playing time in the future.

Martinez gives the Red Sox the middle-of-the-order bat they lacked in 2017 following the retirement of David Ortiz. He hit 45 homers last year as he split the season between Detroit and Arizona.

Both Martinez and his agent Scott Boras are expected to attend Monday morning's announcement. The Red Sox are scheduled to play the Pittsburgh Pirates in Bradenton at 1 p.m.

It's unclear how long it might be before Martinez sees any game action, having not taken part in the first few weeks of spring training preparation.
