The NFL announced Friday that the Patriots were awarded a fourth-round compensatory pick, the 136th overall pick in the draft.
Let's review the compensatory free agents lost and gained in 2017 by the Patriots.
- The loss of Logan Ryan was offset by the signing of Stephon Gilmore;
- Patriots were awarded the fourth-round pick for losing Jabaal Sheard in free agency last year;
- Martellus Bennett did not qualify for the compensatory pick calculations since he was waived by the Packers before Week 10;
- The loss of Chris Long was offset by the signing by Lawrence Guy;
- The loss of Barkevious Mingo was offset by the Rex Burkhead signing;
- LeGarrette Blount qualified for the compensatory pick calculations but because his final numerical value was ranked 36th among all compensatory selections and only 32 compensatory picks are awarded, Blount did not make the cutoff.
- 1st round (#31): their original assigned pick
- 2nd round (#41 or #43): From the 49ers as part of the Jimmy Garoppolo trade. On March 2nd, there will be a coin flip between the Raiders and the 49ers. Patriots fans should root for the 49ers to lose since the three 6-10 teams (Raiders, 49ers, and Dolphins) will be rotating spots throughout the draft and whoever has the top spot in the rotation in the 1st round (9th overall pick) will drop to the bottom of the rotation in the 2nd round (43rd overall).
- 2nd round (#63): their original assigned pick
- 3rd round (#95): their original assigned pick
- 4th round (#136): Compensatory pick for Jabaal Sheard
- 6th round (#205): their original assigned pick
