BSJ Daily Briefing 02.23.18: Red Sox get going, Celtics finally back in action taken at BSJ Headquarters (Regular Features)

(Steve Mitchell/USA TODAY Sports)

Good morning!

A few random thoughts while I wonder if I would get red, green or yellow lights (figure skating humor) while I writing a story if I was judged in real-time:

  • After beating up on Northeastern and Boston College (actually, that was a close game) on Thursday, the Red Sox get the Grapefruit League schedule tipped off today with the Twins. Hector Velazquez is on the hill for the Red Sox.

  • So should we start worrying about J.D. Martinez and how he's still taking his "physical"? It'd be easy to hit the panic button because nothing is going on right now in Boston sports, but I do believe the reports (including from our own Sean McAdam) that the Red Sox are just doing their due diligence.

  • Will be interesting to see how the Celtics respond tonight in Detroit after having to sit on a three-game losing streak for over a week due to the NBA All-Star Game break.

  • Will the Bruins do anything more to the roster before the trade deadline? I sincerely doubt it. I think they're very cautious about disrupting the apple cart and selling off one of their assets. Cam Neely and Don Sweeney, however, have to be asking themselves if they're potentially blowing a Cup run if they stand pat while others (Tampa Bay) improve. Sometimes you just have to go for it.

  • Was engrossed by the women's figure skating final last night and the dueling Russians, Alina Zagitova and Evgenia Medvedeva. Great theater. What happened to U.S. women's figure skating? After having the likes of Gracie Gold and Ashley Wagner shoved down our throats, no one could even name the three American entrants before these Games. Apparently, 12-year-old Alysa Liu is the next great hope in four years.

And away we go...
