Patriots shocked as Philly flies to Super Bowl win, 41-33

MINNEAPOLIS — There will be no sixth ring this year for the Patriots.

A late sack and forced fumble from Philly’s Brandon Graham stymied a key New England scoring opportunity in the fourth quarter and helped lift the Eagles to a 41-33 win over the Patriots Sunday night in Super Bowl LII at U.S. Bank Stadium.

Philly had just scored on an 11-yard pass play from Nick Foles to Zach Ertz to make it 38-33 with just over two minutes left, and Tom Brady looked poised to deliver another title for the Patriots with a last-minute scoring drive. But a Graham sack gave the ball back to the Eagles, and a 46-yard field goal from Jake Elliott with just over a minute left put the game out of reach.

A final rally from New England fell just short, as Philly celebrated its first Super Bowl championship in franchise history. Foles was named MVP.

Brady ended up 28-for-48 for 505 yards with three touchdowns. He also got a tremendous performance from Danny Amendola (eight catches, 152 yards), Chris Hogan (six catches, 128 yards, one touchdown) and Rob Gronkowski (nine catches, 116 yards, two touchdowns).

But it wasn’t enough to overcome the work of Foles and the Eagles. The backup who was thrust into a starting role late in the regular season ended up 28-for-43 for 373 yards with three touchdowns and one interception. He also caught a second-quarter touchdown pass on a play that gave Philly a 22-12 halftime lead. LeGarrette Blount had 14 carries for 90 yards and a touchdown. Corey Clement added four catches for 100 yards and a touchdown.

Things didn’t start great for the Patriots, as New England failed to execute on a handful of key plays that left them in a first-half hole. Stephen Gostkowski botched a field goal attempt after a bad hold, and later missed an extra-point attempt. A reverse that included a pass for Brady fell incomplete after the quarterback dropped the ball. And a fourth-down pass play for Gronkowski was off the mark. It all added up to an early 15-3 deficit for New England, one that was compounded by the loss of Brandin Cooks, who took a shot to the head in the second quarter and left the game.

In contrast, the Eagles rose to the occasion for most of the first two quarters. Blount had 58 yards rushing and a touchdown in the first half, while Foles passed for 215 yards before the break. Their finest moment? When they pulled out a trick play that ended with a touchdown pass from tight end Trey Burton to Foles with 34 seconds left in the half to make it 22-12.

Foles’ only mistake in the early going was a neatly executed interception from Duron Harmon on a batted ball that the Patriots turned into their only touchdown of the first half, which cut the Philly lead to 15-12 with just over two minutes left in the second quarter. After Foles’ first reception of his career that gave the Eagles’ a 10-point lead, that set the stage for the wild second half.

The Patriots cut the lead to three at the end of the third quarter when Brady found Gronkowski and Hogan on touchdown passes to make it 29-26. On the first drive of the second half — the one that ended with the 5-yard touchdown pass to Gronkowski — the big tight end accounted for 68 of the 75 yards on the drive. After a Philly field goal gave the Eagles’ a 32-26 lead, Brady found the big tight end again at the end of another big-time drive with a 4-yard touchdown pass to give New England a 33-32 lead.

10:15 p.m.: Pats on the move here -- a 16-yarder to Gronkowski gets the Patriots near midfield. Brady is now over 500 yards passing.

10:10 p.m.: A 46-yard field goal gives the Eagles a 41-33 lead. Pats need to score and get two to tie.

10:05 p.m.: Two-minute warning. 38-33, Philly.

10:03 p.m.: Graham beat his man to knock the ball away. Eagles ball.

10:00 p.m.: Two-pointer is no good. So there's 2:21 left and Philly leads 38-33.

9:56 p.m.: Nice crosser there and Ertz beats McCourty to the spot. Touchdown Philly. They're reviewing it... and they give it to the Eagles.

9:54 p.m.: New England takes its second time out.

9:51 p.m.: So if you're Philly, do you score as soon as possible, or try and manage the clock and play for the last shot? Looks like they are trying to score.

9:50 p.m.: Chung is shaken up again.

9:46 p.m.: 1,051 combined yards for both teams -- a Super Bowl record.

9:44 p.m.: Was that the biggest third-down stop of the year right there for the Patriots? Maybe. Looks like Philly is still going for it ... and they get it. Wow -- big-time play.

9:38 p.m.: 67,612 is the announced attendance.

9:35 p.m.: These are moments where you lean on your difference makers, and Rob Gronkowski is the ultimate difference maker. A 4-yard touchdown pass and extra point makes it 33-32 with 9:22 remaining. Brady is at 457 passing yards, and there's still more than nine minutes to go.
