Jarell Eddie won't get another 10-day deal with Celtics...for now

DENVER -- Jarell Eddie's 10-day contract with the Celtics expired on Monday night and the 6-foot-7 swingman told BostonSportsJournal.com that the team won't be bringing him back for the time being. 

Eddie was huddled with Celtics assistant general manager Mike Zarren after the Celtics' 111-110 win over the Nuggets on Monday night. The Celtics can sign Eddie to one more 10-day contract before having to decide whether to sign him for the remainder of the regular season. With the trade deadline looming on Feb. 8 though, the Celtics elected to hold off on bringing back Eddie for now, likely because the team is weighing other roster options ahead of the trade deadline. The 26-year-old swingman said it's a wait-and-see situation.

"That's pretty much what it is," Eddie told BostonSportsJournal.com. "'It's complicated,' is what they've said."

BSJ Analysis

The decision was probably a tough one for the Celtics with the injuries in the backcourt right now (Shane Larkin, Marcus Smart) making depth important but Eddie only played six minutes in two games during his ten days as a Celtic. The team can obviously get by without him and probably prefer to keep him on standby for the time being rather than sign him to another deal now and potentially be forced waive him before the trade deadline (if another move is made).

It's a tough situation for Eddie, but unless he has other teams lining up for him around the league right now, all he can do is wait and hope. However, Celtics fans can take this decision as a sign that the team plans to add another piece to the roster in the coming days, via a trade or buyout. Otherwise, that open roster spot wouldn't be needed.
