BSJ Game Report: Stars 3, Bruins 2 (OT) -- Still gaining points

Everything else you need to know from the Bruins' loss in quickie form, with BSJ insight and analysis. 

HEADLINES



Extended: Despite the overtime loss, the Bruins still secured a point after erasing a two-goal deficit and have now earned points in 13 consecutive games with a 9-0-4 record. It’s their longest point streak since a 15-0-1 stretch during the 2013-14 season.

No more OT: Bonus hockey does not favor the Bruins. Boston has a 1-6 record in overtime this season. In fact, it has something to do with the Stars because the Bruins have never defeated either Minnesota or Dallas in overtime with a 0-4-8 lifetime record against that organization.

Powerless: The Bruins struggled on the power play and went 0-for-4 against a solid defensive Stars team. Overall, Boston is 28-for-135 (20.7 percent) on the man-advantage this season. Since a tremendous 3-for-4 performance on the PP against the Ottawa Senators on Dec. 30, the Bruins are 2-for-12 in the last five games.

“Puck recovery hasn’t been good enough for us,” said Bruce Cassidy. “It’s one thing to force a play, but then you better make sure you get the puck back. We didn’t wear them down enough with second chances. It’s been a bit of a problem in the o-zone lately.”

THREE UP

Zdeno Chara: It was only his fourth goal of the season, but it served as a turning point for the Bruins when the captain unleashed a slap shot and beat Stars goalie Kari Lehtonen at 16:28 of the second period. Chara has points (one goal and two assists) in three consecutive games.

Ryan Spooner: Continues to produce offensively and his goal against the Stars gives him five points in his last six games. He’s playing with more of an edge of late and hasn’t shied away from the physical aspect of the game. That line of Jake DeBrusk, David Krejci and Spooner is beginning to find some chemistry.

Anton Khudobin: The Stars could have blown this game wide open, but the Bruins’ netminder was solid and made more than a few terrific saves. With the overtime loss, Khudobin is 9-2-4 this season.

TWO DOWN

Tyler Seguin: He lands in this category because he scored the game-winning goal in overtime. The former Bruin has eight goals and four assists for 12 points in his last 10 games.

“It’s special and it’s weird playing here,” Seguin said. “I enjoy anthems, looking up and seeing the (2011 Stanley Cup) banner that I was part of, so it’s always going to be special playing here and having old teammates on the team. Also happy to only come here once a year, so we’ll take it.”

Matt Grzelcyk: It was a bit of a tough day for the rookie defenseman. It concluded with a delayed penalty that led to Seguin’s game-winning goal.

UP NEXT

The Bruins host the Montreal Canadiens at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday at TD Garden. It will be Claude Julien’s first time back in the building since he was fired last February.
