Week 12 Patriots' offensive and defensive statistics from PFF

Week 12 Patriots Offensive Stats:

Quarterback Tom Brady keeps finding success downfield. The Patriots signal caller completed all three of his deep pass attempts (20-plus yards in the air) for 98 yards against the Dolphins on Sunday. Brady leads the NFL with 24 deep completions and ranks second with 824 passing yards on deep attempts. In addition, his passer rating of 114.4 on deep passes ranks sixth in the NFL.

Brady also continues to have success making plays late in the down as he completed 9-of-13 attempts on dropbacks when he held on to the ball for more than 2.5 seconds and had a passer rating of 105.4 on these attempts. Brady leads the NFL by a significant margin with 15 touchdown passes (Deshaun Watson is second with 10) on late developing plays (plays where he attempts a pass after 2.5 seconds) and also leads the league with a passer rating of 120.5 on these plays.

Running back Dion Lewis had another impressive outing against Miami as he averaged 4.47 yards after contact and broke seven tackles on 15 attempts. Lewis had a lot of success especially running between the left guard and the left tackle as he gained 52 yards on three carries running that way and also broke three tackles on these runs. Currently, he ranks second in PFF’s elusive rating behind only Alvin Kamara as Lewis broke 29 tackles on 97 runs this season and averages 3.45 yards after contact, which is the fourth-most in the league.

After allowing no pressures against Oakland, left tackle Nate Solder had another impressive game as he allowed just one pressure (one hurry) on 33 pass blocking snaps and was our fourth-highest graded Patriot with an overall grade of 86.6. While Solder gave up an average of 4.1 pressures over his first eight game, he surrendered just three pressures in his three games since the Patriots’ bye week.

Tight end Rob Gronkowski showcased his blocking skills once again as he led all Patriots with a run blocking grade of 95.7. In addition, Gronkowski caught all five of his catchable targets for 82 yards and two touchdowns while Brady had a passer rating of 136.5 when targeting the tight end. Gronkowski currently ranks seventh among tight ends in the NFL with 71 targets while his average of 2.11 receiving yards per route run ranks second in the league.

Week 12 Patriots Defensive Stats:

CB Stephon Gilmore had his best game of the season as he was the Patriots’ second-highest graded player with an overall grade of 89.3. Gilmore was targeted three times and he gave up just one reception for five yards while he also recorded an interception. As a result, QB Matt Moore had a passer rating of 2.8 when targeting Gilmore on the day. This was the second game this season when Gilmore gave up less than 10 yards while he is yet to allow more than 65 receiving yards in a single game this season.

Edge defender Trey Flowers had another impressive afternoon as he recorded four total pressures (two sacks and two hurries) on just 21 pass rushing snaps. Flowers has picked up 46 pressures (5 sacks, 14 hits, 27 hurries) on 358 pass rushing snaps this season, leading to a pass rushing productivity rating of 10.0, which ranks 20th among 4-3 defensive ends this season.

Even though rookie edge defender Deatrich Wise led the Patriots with 28 pass rushing snaps, he failed to record a single pressure for the first time in his NFL career. Wise was ranked second among 4-3 defensive ends in the NFL with a pass rushing productivity rating of 18.3 after Week 3; however, his rating of 5.2 since then ranks just 53rd in the league.

Linebacker Kyle Van Noy’s role has drastically shifted since the bye week as the rushed the passer on at least 22 plays in every game since then while his previous high was 21. While Van Noy averaged just 11.9 pass rushing snaps over the first eight weeks, he’s averaging 28.7 pass rushing snaps since the bye week. The former Detroit Lion had the third most pass rushing snaps in the Patriots’ win against Miami with 22 as he recorded three pressures (one sack and two hurries).

The Patriots’ blitzes were successful on Sunday against the Dolphins. While New England recorded a pressure on 31.3 percent of plays with four or fewer rushers, they were able to generate pressure on 41.7 percent of plays when sending five or more defenders after Moore.
