The Patriots had a pair of free-agent workouts Tuesday in Foxborough, as they got a look at linebacker Darnell Sankey and wide receiver R.J. Shelton, according to a league source.
Sankey is a 6-foot-2, 250-pounder who is a rookie out of Sacramento State. He has not played in a regular-season game this season. Shelton is a 5-foot-10, 200-pounder who is in his first year in the league out of Michigan State. Like Sankey, he hasn’t played in a game this season.
In other leaguewide transactional news, the Seahawks released veteran defensive end Dwight Freeney. The 37-year-old played limited snaps in four games with Seattle this season, finishing with three sacks and a pass defensed. With New England cutting defensive end Cassius Marsh earlier in the day, there could be an opportunity for the Patriots to land Freeney as a situational pass rusher. At least one veteran league observer believes Freeney could still be a good fit in New England.
Seattle cut Dwight Freeney--in 4 gms had 3 sacks, 4 hits on the QB &4 TFL in 101 snaps which means 1 play every 9 snaps-he would look good as a Patriot
