Geneo Grissom being paid $15K weekly while on the practice squad taken at BSJ Headquarters (Patriots)

The Patriots have a long history of paying some of their practice squad players more than the minimum salary, for various reasons. The Patriots continued this tradition recently by paying end Geneo Grissom $15,000 a week, BostonSportsJournal.com has learned.

Background: The 2017 standard weekly pay for a practice squad player is $7,200. The 2017 standard weekly pay for a player with two credited seasons like Grissom is $36,176.57.

Grissom was re-signed to the Patriots practice squad on Nov. 11. His cap number is $105,000 ($15,000 times 7 weeks). During his first stint on the practice squad this year Grissom was being paid like he was on the 53-man roster ($36,176.57 weekly). Now he is being paid more than the minimum but less than he was making the first time. Do we classify this as a raise or a paycut? Depends on your point of view.

The Patriots have 10 players on their practice squad. The following players are being paid more than the minimum:

  • CB Ryan Lewis: $27,352.94 (same weekly salary as a rookie)

  • Grissom: $15,000

D.J. Foster, Willie Beavers, Angelo Blackson, Demarcus Ayers, Robert Nelson, Trevor Reilly and Taylor Heinicke)
