LOS ANGELES -- The Boston Bruins have placed forward Brad Marchand and Anders Bjork on injured reserve.

Marchand recently missed two games with a concussion but returned to the lineup against the Maple Leafs last Friday in Toronto. Both he and Bjork suffered injuries during Saturday's loss to the Maple Leafs at TD Garden. Bjork was on the receiving end of a massive collision with the Maple Leafs’ Matt Martin during Saturday’s game. Bjork was able to finish the game.\r

Both Marchand and Bjork missed practice on Monday at Warrior Ice Arena and they did not travel with the team to the West Coast. A player on IR is ineligible to play for seven days. Both injuries would be retroactive to Saturday. After tonight's game against the Kings, the Bruins play the Sharks on Saturday in San Jose and then the New Jersey Devils on Wednesday in Newark.\r

The Bruins are already without David Backes (colon surgery), Adam McQuaid (broken fibula), Ryan Spooner (groin tear) and David Krejci (back). However, it's likely he will return to the lineup tonight against the Kings.\r

Also, Torey Krug exited Wednesday's game late in the third period and did not return. Bruce Cassidy did not have an update after the game, but Krug was seen leaving the Staples Center this afternoon and walking back to the team hotel. The Bruins did not skate this morning, so he was likely in the building for treatment. I'm hearing he's doubtful for tonight's game.\r

This string of injuries is unbelievable. This season wasn't supposed to start like this. During the offseason, Cassidy envisioned a balanced lineup that incorporated a veteran presence, along with a solid younger core ready to develop its game at the NHL level. Had this team remained relatively healthy throughout the season, it could have battled for a playoff spot, but this hole for the Bruins is becoming too big for them to dig out.\r

The Bruins enter tonight's game against the Kings with 77 man-games lost due to injury in only 18 games to start the season.\r

Losing Marchand and Bjork is another major setback for the Bruins. Think of it this way: despite how the remainder of the season plays out, this bundle of adversity will help the youth core's development. This is a time when the organization will get a true sense of the players in their system.\r

We've already talked about the amount of ice time Patrice Bergeron has been getting this season due to all the injuries, so Cassidy has the challenge of balancing the veteran's minutes in order to keep him healthy.\r
