Patriots crush Broncos, 41-16, in most complete performance of season

DENVER -- The Patriots demolished the Broncos 41-16 Sunday night at Sports Authority Field at Mile High.



Tom Brady was 25-for-34 for 266 yards and three touchdowns. He got a big night from Dion Lewis (14 carries, 55 yards), Rob Gronkowski (four catches, 74 yards), Rex Burkhead (63 yards from scrimmage, one receiving touchdown) and Brandin Cooks (six catches, 74 yards)

On the other side of the ball, Brock Osweiler was 18-for-33 for 221 yards with one touchdown and one interception. Emmanuel Sanders had six catches for 137 yards.

The Patriots dominated in all three phases, as they cracked the 40-point barrier for the first time all season. They limited the Denver offense to one touchdown on the night. And New England’s special teams came away with a kick return (a 103-yard masterpiece from Lewis), as well as a blocked punt and a fumble recovery on a punt return from Denver.

Burkhead’s 14-yard touchdown catch and Lewis’ transcendent return gave the Patriots an early 14-6 lead, and New England never looked back. A pair of Stephen Gostkowski field goals and a touchdown catch for Dwayne Allen (his first reception of the year) pushed their lead to 27-9 at the half.

The second half was more of the same for New England, as touchdowns from Lewis and James White allowed the lead to blossom. A third-quarter score from Demaryius Thomas on a seven-yard pass play from Osweiler got the Broncos to within 11 points, but the Broncos could get no closer, as they suffered their fifth straight loss.

Two notes worth passing along: In his first game back with the Patriots, Martellus Bennett had a pair of catches on four snaps. And Brian Hoyer took over the New England offense with 4:32 left in the ballgame. It broke Brady’s consecutive snap streak to start the season.
