Salary cap impact of Patriots claiming Martellus Bennett on waivers taken at BSJ Headquarters (Patriots)

(Mark Hoffman/USA Today Images)

As you probably have heard, Martellus Bennett was claimed on waivers by the Patriots.

Greg Bedard has looked at its 53-man roster implications. Chris Price looked at team reaction, and the reaction around the league. I will dive into its salary cap implications for both sides.

By claiming Bennett on waivers, the Patriots have now become responsible for 8/17th of his 2017 salary ($423,529) and his $37,500 46-man roster bonuses ($300,000) for a total of $723,529. They are also responsible for the following:

  • 2018 salary of $3.6 million

  • 2018 $2 million roster bonus

  • 2018 $250,000 offseason workout bonus

  • 2018 46-man roster bonuses ($37,500 per active game)

  • 2019 salary of $5.65 million

  • 2019 $250,000 offseason workout bonus

  • 2019 46-man roster bonuses ($37,500 per active game)
