Final: Rangers 4, Bruins 2

NEW YORK -- In their first Original Six meeting of the season, the New York Rangers finished with a 4-2 victory over the Boston Bruins Wednesday night at Madison Square Garden.

Boston native, and former Harvard standout, Jimmy Vesey scored two goals for the Rangers. Again, the Bruins had a subpar performance in the first period and couldn't recover the rest of the way.

Observations from the third period

David Pastrnak's lazy hooking penalty erases the Bruins' power play. Bruce Cassidy is not happy on the bench.

Tuukka Rask is not as quick getting off the ice on delayed penalties as some other goalies.

The Bruins have been doing a better job going to the net this period and Patrice Bergeron was just rewarded and gives Boston its second goal of the game. Solid job by Bergeron in front. He's showing his lead-by-example mentality again tonight.

The Bruins weren't good in the first, so only had to get better in the second, which they did, so let's see how the third goes.

Observations from the second period

Chara and McAvoy are back together as a pair after Cassidy tweaked his defense.

Danton Heinen is effective on the power play. I like him on the half wall.

Bruce Cassidy has gone back with Brandon Carlo and Zdeno Chara as a pair. So, it Torey Krug and Charlie McAvoy.

Patrice Bergeron was throwing his body around on that last shift. Trying to send a message to the rest of the team as a wakeup call.

High-energy shift by Sean Kuraly's line. Bruins need more of that throughout the lineup.

Observations from the first period

After Pavel Buchnevich gave the Rangers a 1-0 lead at 9:53, the Bruins quickly responded on David Pastrnak's ninth goal of the season at 10:13. He's scoring but let's see how his defensive game is tonight.

Former Harvard standout and Hobey Baker Award winner Jimmy Vesey gives the Rangers a 2-1 lead at 14:41. Rangers coach Alain Vigneault said this morning he wanted to see more from the Boston native and Vesey is showing it.

Wait, hold the phone. Vesey scores his second to give New York a 3-1 lead at 15:10. He has four goals this season.

So much for the Bruins staring better on the road. The Rangers are crashing the net and getting rewarded for their efforts.
