Red Sox add two more coaches to new staff

Two more additions were made to the Red Sox coaching staff Saturday, with the announcement that Tim Hyers was named hitting coach and Andy Barkett was named assistant hitting coach.

Hyers replaces Chili Davis, who left to become hitting coach for the Chicago Cubs last week while Barkett replaces Victor Rodriguez, who had been with the organization for 23 years but was told he would not be returning last week.

Hyers has been part of the Red Sox organization before, having worked as an area scout for the Red Sox for seven previous seasons – four as an area scout (2009-2012) and three as a minor league hitting coordinator (2013-15). For a brief time in 2014, he worked with the major league staff as Greg Colbrunn recovered from a brain aneurysm.

Hyers, 46, spent the last two years as assistant hitting coach of the Los Angeles Dodgers, working under hitting coach Turner Ward. This past season, the Dodgers set franchise records for most homers, most doubles and most extra-base hits while also recording their highest slugging percentage as a franchise since 1958.

Barkett, 43, has spent 12 years coaching and managerial experience. He spent last year as the manager of the Pittsburgh Pirates Triple A manager after serving as the assistant hitting coordinator. He also has managed in the Marlins minor league system, and for four seasons in the Detroit Tigers organization when Dave Dombrowski was Detroit’s president of baseball operations.

The Sox still must hire a pitching coach. Carl Willis left to become pitching coach with the Cleveland Indians last month.
