The Celtics filled up their 15-man roster for at least one day on Friday, announcing they have signed center Daniel Ochefu. The 6-11 big man played in 19 games with the Wizards as a rookie last season and was waived by Washington earlier this week.
Boston signed him Friday likely with the intention of waiving him in mere days before the start of the regular season. Why bother signing him then? The answer boils down to Boston having the opportunity to take a closer look at Ochefu in the G-League. A NBA team maintains primary D-League rights on four players that were waived by said team during the preseason.
Ochefu will be able to provide some bulk in the frontcourt for the Maine Red Claws in all likelihood when the season begins. He averaged 1.3 points and 1.2 rebounds for the Wizards during the 2016-17 season.
