BSJ Daily Briefing 10.08.17: Last call for Red Sox? taken at BSJ Headquarters (Regular Features)

(Greg M. Cooper/USA TODAY Sports)

We'll see what these Sox are truly made of this afternoon.

Are they going to slink off into the sunset while getting their butts kicked again by the Astros? Or will they mount one last fight and give us more baseball?

On one hand, it's going to be tough, with Mookie Betts still ailing, Doug Fister on the mound and the Astros hitting anything and everything. But on the other hand, the M.O. of these 2017 Red Sox has been to answer every challenge, even when things look bleak. Each time we thought they were going to fold and pack it in, they stepped up and staved off any potential threats.

And I don't think we need to mention what might be in the offing should they get swept for a second-straight season. Not only will John Farrell's future be in doubt, but the brass will have to think long and hard about the core of this team, which once looked so promising. Do they have the stuff of champions, or are they nice regular-season players?

A lot on the line this afternoon.
