FOXBOROUGH — The Patriots have made a trade for a core special teamer, but he doesn't return punts.

The Patriots acquired Lions cornerback Johnson Bademosi in exchange for a sixth-round pick in 2019, according to ESPN.

Bademosi (6-feet, 200 pounds) spent his first four seasons with the Browns, where he played for former Patriots personnel executive Michael Lombardi. An undrafted free agent out of Stanford, Bademosi has missed just two games in five seasons. The previous two seasons, he totaled 49 tackles, seven passes defensed and one interception.

BSJ analysis

Bademosi, 27, figures to be the Patriots' fifth or sixth cornerback, depending on how many they take. Those also in the mix for those spots: Jonathan Jones, Kenny Moore and D.J. Killings.

This might signal the end for Moore. He had shown some promise as a gunner in the preseason games. But with Matthew Slater around, Bademosi would be a big upgrade on the other side

Bademosi played on the edge (gunner and split end) on both the Lions' punt teams.

Will make $1.3 million this season, and has a Pro Bowl bonus.

Here's how one personnel executive views Bademosi: "Plus size. Outside player only. Good straight-line speed. Can play press. Average change of direction. Good strength."
