The Patriots have released tight end Matt Lengel, a source confirmed.
The tight end played six games for the Patriots last season but was injured for much of training camp this year.
The move, which was first reported by ESPN, leaves James O'Shaughnessy and Jacob Hollister in competition for a third tight end spot.
The franchise also announced Sunday that it has released defensive end Caleb Kidder. The 23-year-old was initially signed by the Patriots on July 27.
