Game Report: Edelman injury overshadows strong opening act from starters in preseason win taken at BSJ Headquarters (Patriots)

(Raj Mehta/USA TODAY Sports)

A preseason win is always nice — especially when it includes sharp performances on both sides of the ball by the starters — but the mood after Friday’s 30-28 victory over the Lions was muted because of the knee injury to wide receiver Julian Edelman.

Edelman went down on New England’s first drive of the game. The receiver had just picked up a pair of receptions (one for 11 and another for 23 yards) when he hauled in a catch over the middle from Brady, and raced 18 yards down to the Detroit 32-yard-line. But at the end of his run, he tried to make a violent cut to evade a Detroit defender, and went down awkwardly.
