CLEVELAND - For the second straight night, the Red Sox got a low-hit effort from their starting pitcher. This time, there wasn't as much offensive support until the last two innings, but it still resulted in a convincing 6-1 win for the Sox.
Drew Pomeranz blanked the Indians over 5.1 innings and matched Cleveland ace Corey Kluber pitch-for-pitch.
A solo homer by Mitch Moreland in the fifth and a run-scoring single from Mookie Betts in the eighth was all the damage the Sox could do against Kluber, who fanned 12.
In the ninth, the Sox got themselves some breathing room with four runs off the Indians' bullpen, led by a two-run homer from Eduardo Nunez and an RBI double from Brock Holt.
In the last two games, the Sox limited the Indians to two runs. The win moved the Red Sox 20 games over .500 for the first time this season.
PRE-GAME NOTES:
- David Price threw from a distance of 105 feet at Fenway. On Thursday, he'll scale it back with lesser intensity. By the weekend, the goal is for Price to begin throwing breaking pitches again.
- Dustin Pedroia had a good work day, too, continuing to work on agility and mobility drills while also taking some swings in the cage. "When we return (from the current road trip Friday),'' said John Farrell, "that will involve getting back on the field, working at second base and taking ground balls, his feeds -- all the things that are relevant to the position defensively. Those activities will ramp up and we'll see how he comes out of that progression.'' Asked if Pedroia might be activated by Aug. 31 when the Sox begin a four-game series in New York, Farrell said: "That would be optimistic.''
- Carson Smith will pitch an inning for Pawtucket Wednesday, marking the first time on his rehab that he's pitched with just one day of rest between appearances.
