Both Hanley Ramirez and Xander Bogaerts are not in the Red Sox lineup for Saturday night’s game against the White Sox and while John Farrell said Bogaerts’ absence was scheduled, Ramirez’s return is undetermined and a trip to the disabled list has not been ruled out.
“He’s got some soreness, actually on both sides, in the oblique area,” said Farrell. “This is classic day to day. I can’t tell you how long it’s going to be. At this point I don’t foresee it being a (disabled list situation), but we’ll see how he comes in (Sunday). He would be unavailable tonight.”
Ramirez exited Friday night’s game in the 10th inning with pain on his right side, which started with a swing in the eighth. Mitch Moreland entered for Ramirez and hit a walk-off home run.
Ramirez is batting .200 with one home run and three RBI in his last 10 games (40 at-bats).
In his last 30 games dating back to June 25, Bogaerts is hitting .174 with a .232 slugging percentage and .266 on-base percentage. He was batting .332 on June 10. Bogaerts is currently hitting .280.
Quick hits: As expected, David Price (left elbow) did not throw on Saturday. “No update,” said Farrell. “He’ll have a ball back in his hand when he’s first ready to resume the throwing and continue on from there.” … Dustin Pedroia (left knee) continues to make progress and is on track to come off the disabled list on Tuesday. “Coming along good,” Farrell said,. “Swung the bat in the cage earlier today, continues to ramp up his baseball activity. Threw yesterday. I would anticipate that we get him on field to start taking some ground balls (soon). He’s coming along good.” … Joe Kelly (hamsting) was activated off the 10-day disabled list and will be available against the White Sox. “Joe steps right back in,” said Farrell. “If there’s a seventh- or eighth-inning opportunity, he’s likely going to be called upon.” Kelly was 3-1 with a 1.49 ERA and 1.10 WHIP prior to his DL stint. RHP Austin Maddox was optioned to Pawtucket to make room for Kelly.
