Practice report 08.02.17 taken at Gillette Stadium (Patriots)

(Adam Richins for BSJ)

FOXBOROUGH — After a sloppy practice on Tuesday, the Patriots were back on the field today under mostly cloudy skies.

Were things better today? Lets take a look and find out.

THREE THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW

Langi gets his shot: Harvey Langi, an 24-year-old undrafted free agent out of BYU, received most of the snaps at Rob Ninkovich's old left end rush spot during a practice that featured a lot of sub package work. Langi (pronounced long-ee) is about 6-foot-2 and 255 pounds. Reminds a lot of Tully Banta-Cain in terms of both stature and playing style. Langi was moderately effective, and admitted after practice he has a long ways to go.

Fatigue setting in for receivers: With Danny Amendola, Malcolm Mitchell and Matthew Slater all limited, top-line players like Julian Edelman, Chris Hogan and Brandin Cooks are having to take most of the snaps in first-team situations. They are getting gassed, and when that happens, injuries related to fatigue (cramps, pulls, etc.) can pop up. Both Edelman and Hogan were slow to get up at various points.

Wise continues to impress: After thrusting himself into a starring role on Tuesday, Deatrich Wise continued to look the part as he is starting to stack success on a daily basis. With an emphasis on sub packages, Wise was kicked inside to rush tackle for much of the practice.

TOP PLAYS

  • Jacoby Brissett made a nifty pass to Tony Washington on a crossing route near the sideline that just got over the head of CB Kenny Moore. Also a nice snag by Washington.

  • Both Wise (two), Adam Butler and Geneo Grissom had impressive would-be sacks. Beat their blockers off the ball and closed quickly.

  • Jimmy Garoppolo and favorite target Austin Carr hooked up on a nice score in the left corner of the end zone.

  • CB Jonathan Jones had an acrobatic interception of a Tom Brady pass headed to Edelman.

  • Dominating victories: Flowers over Solder (quick spin move, then used speed around the outside). Brown over Thuney (power rush). Karras over Hamilton (Hamilton got a little off balance and Karras finished him to the ground). Butler over Croston (too much quickness from Butler). Grissom over Fleming (setup him up outside, then quick spin move to the inside and Fleming had no shot).

  • Mason continues to show improved pad level and technique. Against Flowers, who was playing DT, Mason stayed low to the ground and exhibited a great base.

  • It's really amazing to see a rookie fourth-round pick like Wise to line up at every technique, from 5 on the edge to 1 (shading the center). That's what he's doing in these practices. He's obviously feeling his way on the inside, but he flashes as well.

  • Texted a personnel exec to tell him how impressive Wise has been: "You know, that's a good scheme fit for him because he has some edge and inside flex in some sub packages — and can play different shades as an edge player."

QB REPORT

QUICK HITS

  • Some good blocking out of the receivers today, especially the younger guys like Devin Lucien and Tony Washington.

  • Brady and Cooks could not hook up on a Patriots' staple play: hard run action, deep post. Brady barely overthrew Cooks.

  • James White busted off a big run thanks to some good blocking by the right side of the Patriots' line.

  • Brandin Cooks had a hard time getting on the same page with the quarterbacks today. You can also see how much respect the CBs have for his speed. At one point, Stephon Gilmore was nearly 15 yards off Cook.

  • Ted Karras saw action with the first team at both guard spots.

  • Waddle (LT) and Fleming (RT) were in the same spots for the second-straight day.

  • It seems that when Jordan Richards is subbing for the injured Duron Harmon, the middle of the field is wide open for passes.

  • The Patriots worked on point-of-attack blocking for a stretch. Someone, and I think it was Shea McClellin, put Rob Gronkowski onto the ground on the first snap. That's not the first time that has happened in this camp.

  • McClellin stood out in his drill overall. Could get him into the mix more at OLB. Jason Thompson also showed well.

  • Brissett missed TE Sam Cotton on a wide-open touchdown.

  • Brady did the same with TE Dwayne Allen in the flat.

  • Drops: Glenn Gronkowski, Devin Lucien, D.J. Foster, Allen, Austin Carr.
