Outhit 11-5, the Red Sox nevertheless held on to edge the New York Yankees, 4-3, averting a sweep in their season-opening series.

Reliever Jake Diekman fanned the side in the ninth, striking out three sluggers -- Aaron Judge, Giancarlo Stanton and Joey Gallo - to preserve a one-run lead.

The Sox again scored first, taking a 2-0 lead before the teams engaged in a back-and-forth battle, with the Yankees pulling even in the fourth.

Bobby Dalbec snapped the tie with a solo homer in the sixth, and that held up.

Five Red Sox relievers combined to 5.2 scoreless innings.
