WHAT'S UP
The Red Sox fell to the Yankees 3-2 in the first game of Tuesday's doubleheader before dropping the nightcap, 4-1. With the wins, Boston fell into a tie with New York for last place in the American League East, both sitting at 73-72.
The Yankees have won 11 of their last 15 games, while the Red Sox have dropped 11 of 15. Boston is 17-22 since the start of August and 7-14 at Fenway Park in that span.
Schmidt was supposed to get the start on Monday before the series opener was rained out. He threw 6.1 innings against the Tigers last time out, giving up three runs and five hits with six strikeouts. That start came after a winless August, including a no-decision against the Red Sox on Aug. 20 that saw him give up two runs (earned) on four hits (one HR) with eight K's and two walks in 5.2 innings of a 6-5 loss.
He will make his eighth appearance and fourth start against Boston in his career. He's previously 0-1 with a 4.03 ERA.
Houck will make his 12th appearance and seventh start against the Yankees. He is previously 2-2 with a 2.39 ERA, including two no-decisions and a 2.70 ERA in two starts against New York earlier this season.
In his last outing on Friday, Houck threw 5.1 innings in an 11-2 loss to the Orioles at Fenway, giving up five runs (earned) on eight hits (one HR) with two walks and five strikeouts.
Kenley Jansen tested positive for COVID-19 and has been placed on the COVID-related IL after exiting Tuesday's second game with what the Red Sox called "fatigue and illness symptoms." Alex Cora said postgame that Jansen felt dizzy. Boston recalled LHP Brandon Walter from Worcester in the corresponding move.
