Cam Schlittler continues his dominance against the Boston Red Sox as the New York Yankees win game one in the Bronx. The projected AL Cy Young winner pitched 6.1 innings, striking out 10 batters and limiting the Red Sox to two hits.

Boston failed to put runners on base during Payton Tolle's 4.2 innings on the mound. Tolle allowed just one run tonight, allowing three singles in the second inning including an RBI base hit to Austin Wells.

Despite recording two quick outs in the fifth inning, Chad Tracy took out his starter for Erik Miller. That decision turned out costly, as Ben Rice smashed a solo home run in Miller's first at-bat to give New York breathing room.

Boston struggled to find bullpen consistency the remainder of the game. In total, the Red Sox burned through five relievers, and the Yankees kept adding runs, including an eighth inning grand slam by Rice.

The Red Sox recording just three hits tonight, and the Yankees keep their bullpen fresh for the remainder of the series.

Sonny Gray will get the start against Max Fried in tomorrow's elimination game.

WHAT'S UP

PITCHERS (12): Brayan Bello, Jake Bennett, Aroldis Chapman, Garrett Crochet, Alec Gamboa, Sonny Gray, Erik Miller, Wyatt Olds, Ranger Suarez, Payton Tolle, Greg Weissert, Garrett Whitlock

CATCHERS (2): Adley Rutschman, Connor Wong

INFIELDERS (5): Willson Contreras, Caleb Durbin, Isiah Kiner-Falefa, Andruw Monasterio, Trevor Story

OUTFIELDERS (5): Wilyer Abreu, Roman Anthony, Jarren Duran, Jahmai Jones, Ceddanne Rafaela

INFIELDER/OUTFIELDERS (2): Nate Eaton, Nick Sogard

After two live batting sessions, Garrett Crochet makes his return to Boston's roster after 157 days. “The stuff,” interim manager Chad Tracy said. “If he’s in the zone, the stuff. Very encouraging the last two live BPs. ... Was up to 96.5 (mph) in a live BP setting in an empty stadium. And then I think at 95-plus in Fort Myers at noon with nobody there. The difference being like when this guy’s in the zone, if it’s coming in the way we think it can, the stuff and the ability to completely miss bats and wipe any inning out, that’s a chance you’re gonna take with a pitcher like that.”

“Hopefully we can use him (Crochet) multiple times but not knowing necessarily exactly how we’re going to do that, carrying an extra pitcher was important,” Tracy said.
