FINAL: Rays 3, Red Sox 1 - Boston offense sputters as Glasnow dominates for Tampa

Tyler Glasnow held the Red Sox to one run on three hits while striking out 14 (22 swing-and-misses total), dominating as the Rays went on to win 3-1 in Wednesday's series finale at Tropicana Field. Tampa won two straight to take the series after Boston took Monday's opener. The Sox took a 1-0 lead in the third thanks to Connor Wong's RBI triple, but the Rays rattled off three unanswered runs, including the game-tying home run Brandon Lowe in the bottom of the third, Tuesday's hero, as well as the go-ahead bomb for Isaac Paredes in the top of the fourth. Boston was 0-for-8 with runners in scoring position, stranding five in total and four RISP with two outs.

WHAT'S UP

The Red Sox fell to the Rays, 8-6, in 11 innings after Brandon Lowe's walk-off three-run homer. Boston clawed back from 3-0 and 5-2 holes before eventually taking a 6-5 lead in the top of the 11th, but Kenley Jansen failed to come through in a save situation on the road for the first time this season. 

The Sox remain 4.5 games back of the final AL Wild Card spot. They have a chance to take the series against Tampa before beginning a seven-game homestand against the Orioles and Yankees.

Pivetta will make his 11th career appearance and 10th start against Tampa. He is previously 1-5 with a 4.44 ERA against the Rays. In two outings this year, he has a 1.59 ERA. He surrendered two hits and one run (earned) with five strikeouts in three innings at Kansas City on Saturday last time out. 

Glasnow will make his 10th start against Boston. He is previously 2-1 with a 3.39 ERA. Against the Sox on June 3, Glasnow gave up one run (earned) on four hits with three walks and six strikeouts in 5.1 innings of a 4-2 win at Fenway. He gave up three runs (earned) on seven hits with six strikeouts through seven innings in a 3-2 loss at Cleveland last Friday. 

Top prospect Marcelo Mayer is done for the season in Double-A Portland as he's being sent to Florida to finish rehab work on a shoulder injury. He's dealt with left shoulder inflammation since Aug. 2 before re-aggravating the injury upon returning to baseball activities.
