Final: Red Sox 5, Rays 4 - Gonzalez gets walk off hit for the Red Sox in the 12th inning to even the series taken at BSJ Headquarters (Top Red Sox)

(USA Today Sports)

Trevor's Game Notes:

Redemption: Subbing in at 1st base during the extra innings, Romy Gonzalez drove in the winning run in the bottom of the 12th to give the Red Sox the victory. Gonzalez gets his redemption after failing to pick a throw from Ceddanne Rafaela that brought in the 4th run for the Rays.

Active Bullpen: The Red Sox brought out 5 pitchers out of the bullpen, combining for a total of 2 earned runs. A lot of credit for having the lowest ERA in baseball should go to the boys in the pen, especially with the performance they had dealing with runners.

Quality Start: In his 2nd after coming off the IL, Nick Pivetta pitched a quality game pitching 5 and 2/3 innings, striking out 8 batters and only allowing 2 runs.

WHAT'S UP

The Red Sox are 3-7 in their last 10 games after going 8-3 in their previous 11. They lost last night’s series opener against the Rays, 5-3. Tyler O’Neill (2-for-3) hit a game-tying 3-run HR in the 1st inning. Wilyer Abreu went 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored. Kutter Crawford (6.0 IP, 7 H, 4 R, BB, 6 SO) allowed 3 R in the 1st inning, then held TB to just 1 R over the next 5.0 frames. He retired each of his final 7 batters faced.

Tyler O’Neill crushed a 426-foot homer over the Green Monster but the Red Sox offense didn’t do much else in a 5-3 loss to the Rays on Monday at Fenway Park. Boston went 1-for-6 with runners in scoring position and left five men on base.

Nick Pivetta  is pitching in his 200th career game. He's the 19th Canadian-born pitcher to ever reach that mark, and the 5th born in British Columbia (also Ted Bowsfield, Ryan Dempster, Jeff Francis, and Steve Wilson).

Pivetta has struggled in his career against multiple Tampa hitters. Randy Arozarena is 7-for-19 (.368) with a homer, two doubles and four walks against Pivetta. Isaac Paredes is 4-for-10 (.400) with three homers and three walks vs. him. Harold Ramírez is 5-for-17 (.296) with a double and triple. Yandy Díaz is 6-for-21 (.286) with three doubles and seven walks.

Greg Weissert tossed a scoreless 7th inning then allowed a run in the 8th inning last night vs. TB (2.0 IP, 3 H, BB, 2 SO). He heads the Red Sox in pitching appearances (17) only allowing 1 or 0 hits in 15 of his 17 outings. He allowed an earned run for the 1st time in 8 outings since 4/15 vs. CLE (9.2).

Rob Refsnyder pinch hit in the 8th inning last night and struck out, snapping his 16-game on-base streak. It entered yesterday as the longest active streak in the AL and 3rd-longest in MLB. In 18 games this season, Refsnyder has batted .326 with a .446 OBP and .989 OPS (15-for-46, 7 R, 5 2B, 3B, HR, 8 RBI, 9 BB)...Among AL players with at least 50 PA, he ranks 1st in OBP, 4th in OPS, and 8th in AVG.

Both Red Sox catchers will be in the lineup Tuesday. Connor Wong will DH. Reese McGuire, who is 2-for-6 with two doubles in his career against Rays starter Aaron Civale, will catch.
