Final : Ducks 4, Bruins 3 (OT) - Boston allowed 2 goals in final two minutes

The Bruins fell to the Anaheim Ducks 4-3 in overtime in a heartbreaking loss Thursday night. 

Boston got off to a slow start in the first period when Radko Gudas scored to make it 1-0 Ducks. Anahiem also outshot Boston 9-6 and out hit them 14-4 in the first period. 

The Bruins had a much better second period as they scored three unanswered goals to take a 3-1 lead at the second intermission. The three Boston goals were scored by Charlie Coyle, Matt Grzelcyk and David Pastrnak respectively.  

Boston improved on the power play tonight as Coyle scored on the man advantage and the Bruins had more chances during the power play tonight as a whole. 

During the second intermission and into the third period you might have thought the Bruins had this one in the bag tonight. 

Boston ran out of gas late in the third period as Anaheim lived in the Bruins' zone. Leo Carrlson scored 18:05 into the third on the power play to cut Boston's lead to 3-2. Then, with the Ducks having pulled their goalie, Troy Terry scored with just 15 seconds remaining in regulation to tie it at 3-3.

Mason McTavish scored 2:08 into overtime to give Anaheim a road win over the Bruins at TD Garden. 

"We didn't execute. We had probably four or five opportunities to clear pucks and we didn't," Jim Montgomery said after the game. 

The Bruins fall to 6-0-1 on the season and will be back at TD Garden on Saturday when they host the Detroit Red Wings with face off set for 7p.m.

PREGAME NOTES

Milan Lucic and Jakub Lauko will be sidelined tonight due to injuries suffered during the road trip. Lucic will miss his third straight game after taking a slap shot off of his foot Saturday night in Los Angeles. Jim Montgomery told reporters this morning that Lucic will be out a couple of weeks with a lower body injury. Lauko will also be out for at least a week after he got cut by his left eye with a skate which left him with a facial fracture. 

“He's going to be out at least a week until the swelling goes down and will be re-evaluated in a week,” Jim Montgomery told reporters this morning. 

With both Lucic and Lauko out, the Bruins called up Jesper Boqvist from Providence this afternoon. 

Something to keep an eye on tonight is the B's power play. Boston enters tonight only 3 for 22 with a man advantage this season. "Puck movement and creating slot shots, we're just not moving the puck efficiently and quickly enough to be able to beat the sticks on the PK,” Jim Montgomery said this morning. Both Brad Marchand and David Pastrnak  have struggled on the power play in the young season. 

Boston will wrap up their two game series with Anaheim tonight at TD Garden after defeating them four nights ago at the Honda Center. 

The Bruins enter tonight 6-0-0 which is tied for the longest win streak to open a season in franchise history since the 1937-38 season. 

Anaheim enters tonight in the middle of  playing seven games in 12 nights, while tonight continues a stretch of playing five straight games versus an Eastern Conference opponent. The Ducks' also have six rookies on their roster which is the most in the entire league. 

Cam Fowler is expected to appear in his 900th game as a Duck tonight in Boston, as he would become the first Ducks' defenseman to reach the milestone and fourth skater overall. 

Frank Vatrano leads Anaheim with five goals in six games. He is also the fifth player in franchise history with five goals through six games.

"The record doesn't indicate how well they're playing and we need to be ready. I thought we got surprised by their intensity and physicality in the first period the last time we played them, and I hope that doesn't occur again tonight and I hope we start on time," Jim Montgomery told reporters this morning.
