What to watch for: After a quick one-game stop in Tennessee, the Boston Celtics are back at TD Garden for a date with the Minnesota Timberwolves.
It will be yet another chance for Jayson Tatum to get integrated into Boston’s lineup, though Anthony Edwards will be out for the evening.
Tale of the tape: The Celtics and Timberwolves have already met once this year. Minnesota got a home win over Boston back on November 29, earning a 119-115 victory.
Jaylen Brown and Edwards had quite the duel in that game, with Brown putting up 41 points and Edwards finishing with 39 and the win. Neemias Queta finished the night with 19 points and 18 rebounds.
Last game: On Friday night, the Celtics just barely squeaked out a win over the Memphis Grizzlies. They were on the ropes for most of the night against a severely short-handed Grizzlies, led in scoring by Tyler Burton (23 points).
However, in the final few minutes of the game, Derrick White, Luka Garza, and Baylor Scheierman spearheaded a comeback, ending in a 117-112 victory for the Celtics.
Standings check-in: Despite their win in Memphis, the Celtics are still a full four games back of the Detroit Pistons in first place. Simultaneously, they are 1.5 games up on the New York Knicks in third.
Timberwolves check-in: Edwards has missed three straight games with his knee injury, but the Wolves have still gone 2-1 in those contests. However, they are just 5-5 in their last 10 games, sitting at sixth place in the Western Conference.
Julius Randle has been the go-to scorer with Edwards out. In his last 10 games, Randle is averaging 19.3 points, 6.5 rebounds, 3.6 assists, and 1.3 steals while shooting 48.9% from the floor and 27.6% from deep on 2.9 three-point attempts per contest.
Ayo Dosunmu, whom the Wolves added at the trade deadline, has been right behind Randle. In his last nine games, he has put up 14.7 points, 4.9 rebounds, and 3.4 assists while shooting 53.6% from the field and 45.5% from distance on 3.7 attempts per game.
Rudy Gobert has continued his impressive defensive season, averaging 11.1 rebounds and 1.2 blocks in his last 10 games. Meanwhile, Bones Hyland and Jaylen Clark have been red-hot from three.
In his last 10 games, Hyland has shot 40.7% from deep on 5.4 three-point attempts per game. And in his last six, Clark has shot 55.6% from deep on 1.6 attempts.
One fun play: This is another example of how patient Brown has been lately.
First, he starts the play with a quick move to get by Ty Jerome on the perimeter. But then, he slows down at the rim. Instead of going right up with the ball, Brown pump-fakes, waits for Olivier-Maxence Prosper to jump, and draws the foul.
(And in his last 10 games, Brown is shooting 91.7% from the free-throw line on 8.4 attempts per game.)
