Final: Celtics 122, Lakers 114 (OT) - Celtics blow 20 point lead, but come back to win in OT
Game 29: Celtics (-4) at Los Angeles Lakers, 10:00 p.m., Crypto.com arena, TNT
Injuries:
Boston: Danilo Gallinari, Robert Williams, Al Horford (personal reasons)
Los Angeles: Wenyan Gabriel (shoulder), Juan Toscano-Anderson (ankle)
Lakers projected starters: Dennis Schröder, Patrick Beverley, Anthony Davis, LeBron James, Lonnie Walker IV
Refs: John Goble (#10), Mitchell Ervin (#27), Matt Myers (#43)
A little something about this game: The Lakers followed up a stretch of winning 8 of 10 by losing 3 straight on the road before a win over Detroit to wrap up their trip. Anthony Davis has been on a huge tear over the past month, averaging 32 points per game on 65% shooting. Throw out the game where he left after 8 minutes because of flu-like symptoms and it jumps to nearly 35 points per game. The Lakers are still only 11-15, and they're 5-13 vs. teams .500 or better (6-2 against below .500 teams).
How Boston wins: I say start small and try to pull Davis away from the rim and attack as often as possible. Forget the 3-pointers to start the game and just try to get as much as possible in the restricted area. The Lakers are mediocre defensively at the rim, so attack with purpose and finish strong (and rotate someone back to prevent the break). If Davis wants to attack, say, Grant Williams in the half court, then fine. I think Williams has the strength to keep Davis away from the rim and get him back to settling for jumpers.
How the Lakers win: They want to get out in transition, ranking 7th in the NBA in transition frequency and 6th in running off misses, according to Cleaning The Glass. The Lakers offense is in the bottom third in the league, so if they're going to score, this is pretty much how they're going to do it. Boston needs to get past the mental hurdle of whatever fatigue they're feeling today and get back on defense. If the Lakers dominate the transition battle, they could win this game.
Things I’m looking for:
- Finding something in reserve: This has been a long road trip and despite the people who say they don’t want to hear it about fatigue, these guys are probably fatigued. Just because someone loudly declares something, it doesn’t make facts not true. So the Celtics need to find something in themselves to get past that. That's also part of why I want to emphasize the attacking so much. I want to see them push through the mental roadblock.
- Daring the Lakers to shoot: Pack the paint, push Davis out a little, and dare a terrible shooting team to shoot.
- Find a way: I understand the Warriors loss. I understand the carryover to the Clippers game. I also understand this one might be sloppy, but this is one of those “find a way” games the Celtics should be winning. Jayson Tatum generally loves playing against the Lakers, so if he wakes up and does it himself, fine. If it's someone else, then fine. I do not care about the aesthetics of this game… just find a way.
