The Bruins fell to the Tampa Bay Lightning 5-4 in overtime on Monday night. The story of the game was Boston getting killed with too many penalties, they finished with 14 penalty minutes on the night.

The Lightning took a 1-0 lead when Tanner Jeannot scored at the 6:39 mark. Bruins were sloppy in the first period, but Pavel Zacha tied it up at the 9:55 mark, Boston responded 3:16 after the Bolts' goal.

The second period  saw the B's give up a power play goal to Nicholas Paul at the 19:30 mark to give Tampa Bay a 2-1 lead.

The third period was a rollercoaster on both sides. David Pastrnak tied it at two apiece at the 6:26 mark. John Beecher scored 1:21 later to give the B's a 3-2 lead.  Austin Watson scored at the 8:44 mark for the Bolts to tie it up at 3-3. Charlie Coyle answered back for Boston at the 16:09 mark to give the Bruins a 4-3 advantage.

Boston had trouble clearing the puck out of their zone which led to Steven Stamkos scoring on the power play with four seconds remaining in regulation to force overtime.

Boston did not have possession of the puck in overtime as Brandon Hagel scored 1:19 into the overtime period to give the Bolts a 5-4 win.

Jeremy Swayman recorded a career high 41 saves on the night in net for Boston.

The Bruins will be back in action on Wednesday nigh when they will remain in Florida to face the Florida Panthers with puck drop set for 7p.m.

WHAT I LIKED:

  • Charlie McAvoy has a three-game point streak since returning from suspension. Also, a six game point streak it you count before the suspension.
  • Zacha has a five-game point streak.
  • Swayman had a career high 41 saves which kept Boston in the game.

WHAT I DIDN'T LIKE:

  • Struggled to clear puck at the end of the third period, leading to a tying goal by Stamkos with four seconds remaining in regulation.
  • Despite Swayman's 41 saves, he faced 46 shots, which means the defense was non-existent.
  • B's didn't score a power play goal, snapping a six-game streak.
  • Boston's two-game streak of not allowing a power play goal was snapped tonight.

PREGAME NOTES

The Bruins face the Tampa Bay Lightning tonight at 7p.m. with their dads in attendance for the Dads Trip.

“It’s more of a celebration of the dads’ work helping their sons get here,” Jim Montgomery told reporters. “I know the sons want to reward them, but they reward them by playing the right way and I think our leaders lead that way when it gets closer to gamete,” Montgomery continued.

Brandon Carlo has been playing some of the best hockey of his career. “He’s been excellent,”  Montgomery said.. “He’s a steady rock back there. His offensive confidence, you can tell how involved he is…he does a lot of things defensively, he puts out a lot of fires, a lot of mistakes that other teammates are making. It’s why he’s so valuable to us and inside our locker room and his teammates love him," Montgomery continued.

Morgan Geekie (upper-body) and Matt Grzelcyk (upper-body) are on the trip, but will not play tonight. “Everyone’s on the trip because their dads are [here],” said Montgomery, who added that Geekie is “just starting his process.” Grzelcyk will be eligible to come off of long-term IR on Saturday against the Rangers.

The B's face a Lightning team that enters tonight on a two-game winning streak with 20 points, tied with the Carolina Hurricanes with the second wild card spot in the Eastern Conference.

Tampa Bay's power play ranks as the fourth best in the league with a 31.7% success rate. Nikita Kucherov leads the Lightning with 27 points and 13 goals through 17 games. Some other guys to keep an eye on include: Brayden Point (7-16—23), Victor Hedman (4-15—19), and Steven Stamkos (6-12—18).
