Bedard: Patriots Practice Report 08.25.26 - New England wraps up camp with season prep taken at Gillette Stadium (Patriots)

(Paul Johnson for BSJ)

FOXBOROUGHPractice No. 22 is in the books (the final session of camp); let's run down all you need to know, including stats, 1-on-1s, lineup adjustments and observations from the joint practice with the Eagles:

FOUR THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW

Team appeared to start some Seattle prep: There weren't any Seahawks numbers on the scout team, but with the reserves working off cards against the starting offense and defense, it looked like the Patriots started dipping their toes into the water of Seattle prep. This was pretty close to an in-season practice, with very few competitive periods and only one that matched up the starters. The Patriots seemed to work in certain personnel packages (heavy offense) and scheme themes (deceptive plays) for entire periods.

Greg Van Roten gets thrown into a blender: The Patriots are obviously trying to acclimate the new veteran offensive lineman, as he would constantly rotate between center (some poor shotgun snaps), right guard and left guard, often on back-to-back plays.

"Yeah, I think it's just we're trying to bolster our depth, and that's like the value that I bring," Van Roten said after practice. "So I've been playing right guard for the last like seven years. A little bit of center mixed in there. So just for me to kind of get used to the other positions is going to be helpful for me to kind of get back up to speed. Because everyone thinks it's super easy to just flip your hips and switch positions, but it's not. Thankfully, I've had experience starting games the NFL at all three inside, so just a matter of kind of getting back into the groove."

It's also been helpful that Van Roten is playing, at times, next to former linemates Alijah Vera-Tucker and Morgan Moses.

"It's huge, just because you don't have to make up so much time because we've had plenty of games together and years together, so we have our ways of communicating, and just kind of knowing ... I know how Morgan's going to set. I know how (Vera-Tucker) is going to set because we've had countless practices and games together," Van Roten said.

Getting thin at running back now, too: After sustaining a lower-leg injury on Monday, TreVeyon Henderson did not practice. And halfway through practice, Jam Miller exited holding his shoulder pads. So that left Hassan Haskins and Lan Larison (red non-contact jersey) to do most of the work behind Rhamondre Stevenson.

Christian Gonzalez continues to practice: Not that I think he's thrilled about it. Giardi covered it well here.

IMPACT DEFENSIVE PLAYS IN COMPETITIVE TEAM PERIODS

There were a lot of scout team reps as the team prepares for the Seahawks, so some of the plays were tough to tell whether they were really playing it out or just flinging the ball around.

Fumbles: None..
Drops: JaMychal Hasty.
Pass breakups: Kindle Vildor
Interceptions: Kindle Vildor, Kevin Byard
Run stuffs: KJ Britt
Pressures/sacks: Quintayvious Hutchins sack, Dre'Mont Jones, Amari Gainer sack, Milton Williams sack.

PASS RUSH ONE-ON-ONES

Decisive bouts:

Hoping Will Campbell wasn't ready for the first rep, because Dre'Mont Jones blew right inside him.
Jared Wilson completely stunted Cory Durden.
Isiah Iton dusted JonDarius Morgan.

• Liked that Caleb Lomu had a rep against Gabe Jacas where Lomu took the fight to him and shut him down pretty quickly, but Jacas got his revenge later.

THREE UP/THREE DOWN

It wasn't that kind of practice.

ODDS AND ENDS

Caleb Lomu was mostly at right tackle in practice after playing the left side last week.

Craig Woodson and Lorenz Metz worked on the lower field.

KJ Britt continues to finish a strong camp. Not sure how he didn't have an interception of a Tommy DeVito ball to Eli Raridon, but it got through. Britt's all over the field.

Chad Muma is running decidedly third team.

• With Marcus Bryant out, James Hudson moved back to left tackle and looked like a beast in 1-on-1s, going 4-0 on the second and third team lines (also no Metz).

Dametrious Crownover started drills at right tackle, but did appear at left tackle.

• Probably the biggest "play" was a Tommy DeVito deep pass to Efton Chism.

Andy Borregales appeared to make all six of his attempts today on the skinny goalposts from 33, 40, 43, 45, 49 and 55 yards (the last one was at the end of a situation).

• I continue to have some issues with Alijah Vera-Tucker's down-to-down play, but I really enjoy watching him get out on a screen pass.

• New punter Matt Haack, a lefty, got a full workout in. Seemed to punt fine. I do worry a little about his get-off being a little slow. I clocked it at 2.14 seconds from snap to punt. Of course, he was punting from midfield, and there's not usually much of a rush then. Haack also seemed to hold well on field goals.

• Was busy the past couple of days with college move-ins, so my wrap of the second preseason game is coming tomorrow. Appreciate your patience.
