The long-debated and long-awaited trade (by him) of Kayshon Boutte has finally happened.
The Patriots are shipping Boutte to the Houston Texans for safety Jaylen Reed and a draft pick, reportedly the Saints' original 2028 7th-round pick.
As we reported here long ago, Boutte requested a trade during the offseason, concerned about his on-field opportunities after the signing of Romeo Doubs and the eventual acquisition of A.J. Brown. He remained away from the team for the voluntary portion of OTAs, only reporting for mandatory mini-camp. He maintained a high level of professionalism throughout those workouts and the first three weeks of the preseason, prompting wide receiver coach Todd Downing to say he would use Boutte as an example for the rest of his career.
Boutte developed a good rapport with Drake Maye during Maye’s first season with the Pats, and though he got fewer targets in 2025-26, still produced, catching 33 of 46 throws sent his way for 551 yards and six touchdowns (and another 9 grabs in the playoffs). His one-handed diving catch over Derek Stingley in the playoff win over Houston was one of the plays of the postseason.
But entering the final year of his rookie deal, Boutte saw the money someone like Doubs got in free agency, equated himself with that player, and believed the only way he could achieve that was to be significantly more involved in the offense than the Pats could promise him.
Reed is a 2025 6th-round pick out of Penn State who's had a good summer with the Texans. He dealt with some injuries last season and eventually appeared in 9 games (including 2 in the postseason) for Houston as a rookie, with 1 start. The book on him is he’s more of a box-safety - Reed is 6 feet, 212 pounds - and can struggle in coverage. He had 12 tackles during a late November game against the Bills.
Now former teammate Reed Blankenship recently spoke well of Reed, telling reporters, “He’s a baller. You see it in the preseason. He’s coming downhill. He’s hitting guys.”
BSJ ANALYSIS: I never wavered on this. Boutte wasn’t going to remain in New England this season, whether the deal was done before the end of camp or at some point during the campaign. I believe his good attitude, in part, was a wink-wink, nod-nod agreement with Mike Vrabel and the front office that they would do right by Boutte and find him a home. When Houston’s second-year wideout Jayden Higgins suffered a torn ACL last week, the Texans got the wheels in motion quickly and completed the deal earlier on Monday.
Boutte is a better receiver than Kyle Williams or Efton Chism. Still, the Pats are committed to making sure Williams has a role on this team, and keeping Boutte on the roster would further eat into what limited snaps there are to go around. Also, as I reported repeatedly, the league's view of Boutte was not nearly on the same level as the local view - both media and fanbase. They told you that when the Pats put the 'For Sale' sign up around the NFL Draft and found no takers.
The acquisition of Reed bolsters the Pats' depth at the safety position, which is being tested not only because of veteran Mike Brown’s rough summer, but also by an injury to Craig Woodson (which occurred on day two of the joint practices with the Eagles). I wouldn’t be surprised if Reed finds himself on the field Thursday in Cleveland.
