Patriots Camp Report 07.26.25: Team readies for full practices as pass offense is inconsistent taken at Gillette Stadium (Patriots)

(Adam Richins for BSJ)

FOXBOROUGH - Practice No. 4 of 2025 is in the books; let's run down all you need to know: all the stats, 3 up/down, and odds and ends:

THREE THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW

Getting ramped up: The pads don't get put on until Monday but this was a good primer for that in a longer practice that was basically a test run for Monday. The offensive and defensive lines went through one-on-ones, and we got our first 7-on-7 period of camp. It was pretty close to the real thing.

Maye has highlight play, but pass protection again an issue: Drake Maye was 11 of 20 overall between 7 on 7 and team periods, including two drops, as the defense was pretty stingy. But Maye gave the crowd what they came to see when he rolled right, and unleashed a 50-yard bomb off one foot to Demario Douglas, who had gotten behind Kyle Dugger (where have I heard that before?). But pass protection was an issue at times as Maye would have been sacked five times, including on all three attempts during one of Maye's sets (coincidentally, that was when Jared Wilson started at center). It was somebody else each time: Milton Williams beat Mike Onwenu, Keion White got Cole Strange, and then K'Lavon Chaisson got around Will Campbell. Until the pads get put on, I'm not going to get too worked up over this, but I'm sure some will (hi Felger & Mazz).

Carlton Davis doesn't take part in practice: After walkthroughs on Friday, you'd figure just about everyone would be available, and that appeared to be the case as players on a pitch count like Christian Barmore, Morgan Moses and Carlton Davis hit the field. Davis was wearing a padded helmet before practice, did a turn on the bike, but then he walked off the field not to be seen again. That's the second missed practice for Davis this week. Vrabel said previously that Davis was on a program, but this appeared to be an audible.

TOP PLAY

THREE UP

LB Robert Spillane: Had two pass breakups and a sack to be very productive.

C/G Jared Wilson: A couple of firsts in this practice as he took some snaps at right guard, and Wilson also got the start of a period at center. Wilson got a lot of good reps at left guard and center.

WR Demario Douglas: With Stefon Diggs not being targeted as much, it seemed like Douglas picked up most of the slack along with some Kayshon Boutte sprinkled in. Along with the touchdown, Douglas had a leaping catch at the sideline and beat Marcus Jones across the middle.

TWO DOWN

K Andy Borregales: Went 2 for 4 again as the kickers got a chance for the second practice. He missed an extra point wide left (most of his misses have been that way) and pushed a 45-yarder wide right. He finished making from 50 and 47. So far, he's 4 of 8 to start camp. Meanwhile, Parker Romo was 4 for 4 today and is 7 of 8 in camp.

WR Stefon Diggs: Didn't see the ball very much, had a drop, juggled another deep pass from Maye, and then had the ball poked out by Marcus Jones.

LG Cole Strange: Allowed a sack each of Maye and Dobbs, and Keion White got him each time. After the second one he was removed.

ODDS AND ENDS

  • Henderson was very active in the pass game and outside one touchdown from Dobbs (beating Marte Mapu and Brenden Schooler), it wasn't all that productive. Maye had Henderson open deep once, and they couldn't connect. Didn't love the route. He also had a drop of a Maye pass in the flat that was a bit low.
  • Javon Baker flashed for the first time hauling in a couple of deep passes, including one over Jaylinn Hawkins from Maye.
  • Spillane broke up consecutive Maye passes to Hunter Henry and Douglas.
  • Harold Landry stuffed an Antonio Gibson run and talked a lot of smack.
  • Jonathan Kraft was on the sidelines at one point.
  • Rookie Craig Woodson saw a dramatic uptick in his playing time, including some with the top unit.
  • Jabrill Peppers got dinged up at one point but stayed in.
  • With Tavai out, Mapu got increased time with the second unit.
