Patriots Camp Report 08.14.23: Mike Gesicki leaves with injury; Trent Brown back fully in pads taken at Gillette Stadium (Patriots)

(Adam Richins for BSJ)

FOXBOROUGHPractice No. 14 is in the books, let's run down all you need to know from a lively padded practice:

THREE THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW

TE Mike Gesicki leaves with an injury: The TEs and RBs went through a new-ish one-on-one receiving drills against the linebackers/safeties and Mike Gesicki was tackled to the ground by Jahlani Tavai. Gesicki was in immediate pain, favoring his right shoulder, was tended to, and left practice. It appeared to be a shoulder injury — at least a separation, if not a dislocation or a collarbone injury — and he did not return. Tavai was dismayed after the injury. It didn't look good. Patriots have run a ton of 2 TE sets in practice and there is no depth behind Hunter Henry with the likes of Matt Sokol, Anthony Firkser, Scotty Washington and Johnny Lumpkin.

From Giardi, who was watching the drill: "Wasn't anything excessive from LB Jahlani Tavai, but Gesicki could only manage to get to his knees before lying back down. Trainers made sure his elbow was supported as they left the field, likely to avoid additional movement in the shoulder."

Trent Brown practices fully in first padded practice: And on the 14th day - the final open practice in Foxborough - the Big Fellas donned pads and went through every single drill. Didn't take a play off. Seemed to play really well. This is a great sign for the Patriots. Even better: appears LG Cole Strange is getting real close to being back. Perhaps next week for Titans practices.

Malik Cunningham in slash role: Don't want to give too much away since fans are not at practice - that could change with public practices in Green Bay - but Cunningham was still in a white receiver jersey, but received a handful of snaps at QB. They were not dedicated QB snaps. The team appears to be intrigued by what he showed on Thursday and are trying some things to see how they look and if they are worth the investment of more practice.

QB STATS

I wouldn't say the reps were fully competitive, but they were better than Sunday.

Mac Jones: 11 of 15, 2 TDs, 2 sacks.

3 of 3, sack
1 of 4, TD (Bourne)
7 of 8, TD (Henry), sack

Bailey Zappe: 8 of 10, INT, 4 sacks

1 of 2, sack
3 of 3, sack
4 of 5, INT, 2 sacks

HANDS

Fumble: Zappe (snap).
INT: Shaun Wade (Zappe).
TDs: Bourne, Henry both from Jones.
Sacks: Godchaux, Uche (Stueber) twice, Team 2, Barmore (Andrews), Guy.

SHANK IT OFF

Chad Ryland got the field goals today and was so-so. Missed 2 of 7.

Corliss Waitman was way better than Bryce Baringer in a strong wind. Of Baringer's three punts, 2 had hang times under 3.7 seconds. Waitman only had 1 of 5.

TOP PLAYS

  • Bourne's 1-handed TD catch from Jones in seam of the end zone.
  • Barmore trucking David Andrews for a sack.
  • Wade's one-handed INT of Zappe on a screen near the goal line that would have been a pick-six.

THREE UP

QB Mac Jones: Pretty sharp today and there is little doubt this is his team.

WR Kendrick Bourne: Great TD grab and more active.

WR Juju Smith-Schuster: He's starting to ramp up with a lot more receptions.

TWO DOWN

QB Bailey Zappe: He's had a rough time for about a week and he is holding the ball longer and longer.

OT Andrew Stueber: Got benched at one point.

QUICK HITS

  • Standout edge-setting reps: Barmore over Reiff, who lost his helmet; Ekuale over Hines; Anfernee Jennings powerful on Sokol; Keion White handled Stueber easily; Uche super quick on Lumpkin.
  • Offensive line positions were the same as Sunday. Reiff at guard, Sow and McDermott at RT.
  • Sidy Sow, Atonio Mafi and Keion White attempted to catch punts for a team reward. Sow muffed his but the others caught their punts.
  • Demario Douglas continues to have a real role.
  • Kayshon Boutte and Tyquan Thornton are definitely on the second team. Boutte was productive.
  • Belichick on Ownenu: "Day-to-day. Take it day-to-day. When he’s ready we’ll put him out there. If he’s not ready, then he’ll stay on PUP, same as all of the other players that are in that same classification. When they’re ready, they’re ready."
