Patriots Camp Report 08.08.23: Looks like not many starters will play vs. Texans from prep-heavy practice taken at Gillette Stadium (Patriots)

(Adam Richins for BSJ)

FOXBOROUGHPractice No. 12 is in the books, let's run down all you need to know: stats, observations, one-on-ones, 3 up/down, etc:

THREE THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW

Light practice full of game prep: Outside of one-on-ones and one competitive red zone period, the Patriots spent most of practice getting the backups ready for the Texans on Thursday. The rest of practice came off of cards. It appears like Bailey Zappe is set to start with the backup weapons and a line that consists of LT Conor McDermott, LG Atonio Mafi, C James Ferentz, RG Kody Russey and RT Sidy Sow. That would leave just OT Andrew Stueber, C/G Jake Andrews and G Chasen Hines to come off the bench. Obviously things can change, but that was the vibe from practice.

Trent Brown increases usage, marginally: The presumed starting left tackle did not take any 1-on-1 reps, but he did make a brief appearance in 11-on-11 drills when the starting offense was working as the show team off cards against the defensive players that will likely start against the Texans. It wasn't very competitive, but Brown was at least moving a little bit.

Ronnie Perkins injured again: The Patriots' third-round pick in 2021 draft out of Oklahoma appeared to be injured in 1-on-1s and was seen riding off the field on a cart. His first two seasons ended on injured reserve. He has yet to be active for a game. Seemed like he was having a decent camp.

ONE ON ONES

Receivers via Giardi

Back to a more normal quarterback rotation during one-on-ones, with both Mac Jones and Bailey Zappe working with the wide receivers, this time in red zone work. Jones finished 5-of-8, while Zappe was 5-for-6. Here’s how it broke down by quarterback.

Jones

- hit Kendrick Bourne on an out with Jack Jones trailing in coverage.
- Lofts one into the corner for JuJu Smith-Schuster but Myles Bryant comes up with the PBU.
- DeVante Parker gets a half step in the back of the end zone but ref indicates Parker doesn’t get both feet in bounds. Incomplete.
- Cornerback Quandre Mosely forced something that I don’t ever recall seeing in 1-on-1s: Mac not throwing the ball. Mosely blanketed Kayshon Boutte.
- Raleigh Webb beat Marcus Jones on a corner route .
- Isaiah Bolden locked up below rookie Malik Cunningham, fighting through hands on a high throw from Jones.
- Tyquan Thornton made a nice catch on a comeback against Mosely, snatching a low throw that was behind him as well.
- Boutte spun a guessing Bryant around for an easy completion.
- Parker won a fade against Marcus Jones. After, all the DBs dropped down and did push-ups.

Zappe

- Quick out to Boutte against Christian Gonzalez.
- Thornton beats Shaun Wade on a skinny post.
- Tre Nixon beat Rodney Randle on an in-cut.
- Smith-Schuster wins against Randle on an out-breaker.
- Zappe fires too high and wide for Thyrick Pitts, who had beaten Ameer Speed on an out.
-  Looked like Bourne got Jack Jones on a return route.

Linemen

Decisive wins

  • None today but best matchups were David Andrews handling Christian Barmore, Matthew Judon taking his first rep of camp and beating Riley Reiff fairly easily ... Conor McDermott was flagged for holding Keion White, and Josh Uche dusted McDermott.

SHANK IT OFF

K Chad Ryland got the reps today and was 3 of 4.

TOP PLAYS

  • Mike Gesicki's twisting 1-handed grab of a Jones pass.

TWO UP

OG Chasen Hines: Has really come on in recent days and was 2-0 in 1-on-1s.

TE Mike Gesicki: Has come on this week and had a phenomenal twisting 1-handed TD catch from Jones in a bunch of traffic.

TWO DOWN

C/G Jake Andrews: Was 0 for 2 in 1-on-1s and it appears he's pretty far down the depth chart heading into Thursday.

OT Conor McDermott: Continued a brutal stretch of days with another rough 1-on-1 period and a sack in team.

QUICK HITS

  • UMass basketball coach Frank Martin was at practice.
