Patriots Camp Report 07.27.23: Offense struggles in red zone as Judon continues to sit taken at Gillette Stadium (Patriots)

(Adam Richins for BSJ)

FOXBOROUGHPractice No. 2 is in the books, let's run down all you need to know: stats, observations, 3 up/down, etc:

TWO THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW

Offense struggles in the red zone: Both Mac Jones, who got all the starter reps, and Bailey Zappe struggled to get much traction in the red zone as they combined to go 15 of 29 with 3 TDs, INT (Jones) and 3 sacks.

Jones' interception came against pressure as he rolled out and he forced it into Kyle Dugger.

At this stage, this is not a big deal. It's a compressed area and the defense always has the advantage, especially with a first-team offense dealing with a new system and two new main targets (Juju Smith-Schuster and Mike Gesicki). Takes reps and trust. Plus, there's not much open out there, especially with the first group against the starting defense — which knows their system like the back of their hand.

Matthew Judon situation is curious: Judon has been here both days and gone through the early conditioning — often full-out sprinting — and then he goes down to the lower field for rehab. He could be dealing with an upper-body injury that needs some rehab, but this has the look of a hold-in. Judon has two more years left on his deal, but his guaranteed money has mostly been spent and he's only due to make $22 million the next two seasons in cash. His OverTheCap valuation is $17.9 million.

Rhamondre Stevenson in rehab group: The standout running back did not take part in practice today, leaving the bulk of work to Kevin Harris, Pierre Strong and JJ Taylor. Taylor, in particular, saw an uptick in reps and action.

TOP PLAYS

  • Mac Jones touchdown in right corner to DeVante Parker over Marcus Jones. Could have been out of bounds, but it was a very nice play with almost perfect timing.
  • Nice back-of-the-end zone play from Zappe to Matt Sokol.
  • Nice job by Dugger stepping in front to pick off Jones. Dugger has a good knack for that.

FIELD GOALS

Chad Ryland matched Nick Folk's perfect day with one of his own, 5 for 5. Ball comes off the foot hard, too.

THREE UP

CB Jack Jones: Still playing with the 2s, Jones had at least two pass breakups and had tight coverage.

RB JJ Taylor: Got more reps and seemed to do well with them. Nothing eye-popping but a productive day.

ED Josh Uche: Is off to a fast start in this camp and made a really nice play on a screen pass to shut it down.

TWO DOWN

Kendrick Bourne/Tyquan Thornton: Those two have barely touched the ball the first two days. Of course, they're not exactly big red zone targets, but still...

Quarterbacks: I'll say this about Jones — at least he's trying to make plays with a high degree of difficulty as most of his passes were corner routes. Zappe is Captain Checkdown so he's going to compile stats.

QUICK HITS

  • Not alarmed about the offense. Defense is always ahead.
  • All red zone stuff again in this practice.
  • Bill Belichick was in the offensive huddle a lot today, but it seemed most was relegated to listening to the playcalls.
  • Chris Board got a lot of LB reps today.
  • Bill O'Brien is definitely full of energy and seems to love teaching. Gives out little tidbits to the players after every rep in smaller groups.
  • Same starting offensive line today with Murray at RG, Reiff at RT.
  • Second team was McDermott, Russey, Ferentz, Hines and Stueber. Sow got third-team reps at RT.
