NFL teams are spending the next couple of days before Monday's free agency period dealing with contracts and jettisoning some players. Here are some moves that are interesting to me, and then my read on those situations:
- Eagles allowing Darius Slay to seek trade
- Vikings release WR Adam Thielen
- Patriots expected to attend Odell Beckham’s workout
- Jets release WR Braxton Berrios
Patriots news:
- Patriots pick up two compensatory picks: a fourth-rounder, 135 overall for JCJackson; and a sixth-rounder, 210 overall for Ted Karras.
- Patriots released P Jake Bailey
- Patriots re-signed LB Raekwon McMillan
BSJ ANALYSIS
- Eagles allowing Darius Slay to seek trade
In addition to Jalen Ramsey, this is another potential No. 1 man corner on the market, which is great news for the Patriots (our No. 1 need for them). Even better for New England? Slay is represented by Drew Rosenhaus, who is an all-time playball-with-Belichick agent. Most of their free-agent additions in recent years have been Rosenhaus clients, and there is mutual respect there. Slay hated Matt Patricia, who shipped him out of Detroit, but it seems like Patricia, if he's back, won't be in much of a coaching role.
- Vikings release WR Adam Thielen
Productive receiver when healthy, but he's been dealing with more dings in recent years and he's a possession receiver. Could be a cheaper alternative to Jakobi Meyers, but I'm not jumping out of my seat for him.
- Patriots expected to attend Odell Beckham’s workout
Doing their due diligence, as they should, but I don't see much of a match here. OBJ loves the spotlight, getting paid and winning after a taste with the Rams. I assume contenders will be in on him, but if the workout isn't great and he's cheap with upside, then I could see the Patriots being involved.
- Jets release WR Braxton Berrios
This is Belichick's music. Berrios had a tough season last year with injuries and the QB situation, but the former Patriots pick is a rock-solid slot receiver with good punt return ability. If Meyers walks, Berrios would be a cheaper alternative and a more traditional Patriots slot.
- Patriots pick up two compensatory picks: a fourth-rounder, 135 overall for JC Jackson; and a sixth-rounder, 210 overall for Ted Karras.
That gives them 10 picks. OverTheCap.com expected another 7th-rounder for Brandon Bolden, but that last pick didn't come through which is a little bit of a disappointment.
On Bailey ... tough and quick fall from grace. Was an All-Pro punter, got a four-year, $13.5 million contract extension, was injured a lot, and then suspended before getting cut. And he filed a grievance against the team. Bailey and McCourty combined are $12 million in dead cap. Sometimes things just don't work out. Onto the next.
McMillan is a typical Belichick depth move to round out the roster. If he's a little more healthy this year, he's a good role player with some coverage skills that he didn't really show this past season.
