The Red Sox turned some depth pitching into a couple of position player prospects with a four-player trade with the Tampa Bay Rays.
The Red Sox sent Jeffrey Springs and Chris Mazza to the Rays in exchange for catching prospect RonaldoHernandez and infielder Nick Sogard. The Red Sox also included $100,000 in cash to complete the deal.
Hernandez was once considered a Top 100 prospect. In 2019, the last full year of minor league ball, he slashed .265/.299/.397 with nine homers in 103 games. In five minor league seasons, he has an OPS of .802 and hit 21 homers in the Midwest League in 2018.
Evaluators have praised his power and arm strength while questioning his receiving skills. He was an international free agent signing out of Colombia in 2017.
The Red Sox are thin at catching in their minor league system and Hernandez gives them a project worth watching.
