After a long afternoon of back-and-forth, the Red Sox and Rafael Devers reached agreement on a one-year deal for 2021 and avoided salary arbitration.
Officially, the Sox and Devers had until 1 p.m. Friday to reach an agreement, at which time they were expected to exchange figures and proceed to an arbitration hearing next month. But 1 p.m. passed without any word of an agreement.
Given that the team has had a policy of "file-and-go'' -- i.e. once they exchange arbitration figures with the player, the team is committed to having the matter settled in arbitration with no interest in further negotiation -- it appeared for a time that it would take until next month to determine the 2021 salary for Devers.
